Any thoughts on Oscars 2016?

I missed it this year, I was too tired to stay up that late.

I hadn’t seen any of the films.

What I do like seeing is old clips of past Oscars.

I recently watched a video Karl Malden receive his Oscar. The Oscar program seemed to go quicker back then.

It’s purely political these days. That and a venue for celebrities to score $252K worth of free stuff.

At least they now get taxed on it.

We the British, gave Leonardo DiCaprio a BAFTA award for best actor and The Revenant for best film.

Also we awarded the honour of knighthood to one of your greatest actors-Sir Sidney Poitier.

it was just an observation. some of my favorite artists are British or Australian.

Has DiCaprio ever had a part in a British picture? I wasn’t sure if they used many American actors in British films.

Besides the fact that they haven’t made a Mad Max in a while ( also it is an amazing looking film) , I think the reason for this installments popularity is the underlying feminist message that runs through it.

I guess I’m just an old fogey but I believe that in the past we had real movie stars with glamor, mystique, and personality galore, apart from the quality of many of the films they made thanks to their fine acting and the film directors.

I think the last time I actually, genuinely cared about the Oscars was when The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King swept all its nominations 12 years ago. Though more recently, I was happy to see The Artist take Best Picture.

I don’t think he has.

No they don’t seem to cast many American actors, though that won’t be because they don’t recognise how talented so many are.

Its probably because the British Film Industry doesn’t make that many films due to not receiving enough financial backing, so I expect someone as famous and talented as Leonardo Dicaprio would be paid a pittance compared to what he could earn from a Hollywood film.

I’ve seen the trailer for the Spotlight but it really looks antii-catholic.I may see it but waiting for someone who has seen it in Catholic Church to review it.

Many members on these forums lived through this time in the Church. This was not the first of the abuse cases. There were a few in the eighties and then Father Porter who was from my hometown came out years before this and there was a great deal of speculation that there were many other cases of abuse.

Once the Globe started reporting the cases, the newspapers actually went on day after day for over a half years. I actually collected the daily newspapers but then the piles were getting so big, I threw them all out.

I have a feeling that this movie was made to glamorize the Globe which is a rag paper few read because of its abortion politics.

I really don’t believe Hollywood is interested in the abuse scandal and the Globe has published so many papers on these actual cases. The stories have already been put out there.fully.

Again I think the award is political.

Agree, Britain has a small budget. Often their TV series are only 10 weeks long compared to our 20 week schedule. They produce good series but it is limited which actually makes it more enjoyable for me because it doesn’t seem to drag on forever

I love Maggie Smith and they do have some great actors . I’ve heard other actors complain because the British are taught a certain way to act, more method actors. Often they are seen as too rigid.

They seem to really take their acting very seriously.

The Church was very powerful. During this time in the church rumors went around at least in my town as that is where one of the priests came from.

Long before these stories were told, there were feelings in the church that there were untold stories. then slowly cases came forth. the first big case I remembered was the Father Porter case. I once said to a fellow catholic from my neighborhood that I knew that he looked like a priest I met meaning for it to be a compliment. I then found out that he was one of the victim and had since left the church.

Once the Globe started the stories day after day, all the details came forth. It has not been buried since then but it is troublesome.

I agree that the story needs to be told. I am just leery of how Hollywood will tell it.

I also knew of Cardinal Law having see him at marches. He was very respected prior to this and very active in the prolife movement paying for buses to take people to go to the clinics to pray at that time.

I haven’t decided whether I will view the film. The stories were already coming out, just not as in your face but curious how they will tell it.

I think every Catholic should see the film.

I think the better trained actors are more technique in style, rather than method.
The ones who have been in a lot of stage plays can sometimes appear more stiff and theatrical, but many are versatile and like to play various character parts, preferring not to be typecast.

I really enjoyed watching Mark Rylance in Bridge of Spies and the BBC Production of Wolf Hall. I am a big fan of Michael Caine and Anthony Hopkins too.

The film isn’t anti-Catholic. It’s anti-pedophlia, anti-lies, and anti-covering up crimes against children.
Plenty of higher-ups in the church have seen the film and praised it…so if that’s what you are waiting for before you see it, you are safe to see it.

I just could not see how a movie that essentially has made no money gets to be number one at the Oscars. Seems political.

The Globe itself has been an anti-catholic paper for years. Few buy it and I am surprised it is still in business.These stories were coming out. They were already in my local newspaper not always on page one but they were in the local papers. The Globe just headlined them all for over six months day after day which was fine.

Who listens to the Vatican newspaper? Often it has a liberal slant. I read a bunch of catholic sites and they seem to be concerned about the movie

I have seen a few prior movie on some of the priests involved. I am just not sure I want to see this film. I haven’t read catholic answers review yet. We;ll see.

So many mixed emotions. On one hand, the hierarchy is sort of trapped - had they condemned the film, they would have been accused of continuing the cover-up — which, as we just sadly saw in the breaking news several days ago about Johnstown-Altoona diocese, continued long after the Dallas norms. On the other hand, think of the previous “journalism” award-winning movie, “All the President’s Men.” That movie garnered awards because it was a chance for Hollywood “liberals” to glorify the crimes and take-down of their bête noir, Richard Nixon. I think “Spotlight” is the Church equivalent of “All the President’s Men,” with Hollywood getting the chance to besmirch the whole Church.
