Hey does anyone know of any particular pointers on arguing against christian scientists? Me and my girlfriend are having to deal with a couple 🙂

Thanks

Just simply on the main points to argue against them. Like how they think that they can just pray to heal themselves, and have no faith or allowance at all for medicine.

My answer would be that God gave us the brains and talents to invent medicine for the greater good.🤷 Why would he do that if we are not suppose to use them:shrug: I feel God gave us marijuana for medicinal purposes but look how we have perverted it:( Look at the Aloe vera plant!! There are so many natural plants out there(that God gave us)so we could eventually discover and make medicine:D

Im afraid that is all Ive got—sorry:o

Hi Master Catholic,

They deny that sin, death and sickness are real.

They see the physical world as being an illusion, not real.

They believe in what is called “mortal mind” and it really does not exists. They claim that our false beliefs in sin, sickness, physical world and death originate from mortal mind.

Their textbook Science and Health with key to the scriptures ( which is online ) redefines biblical terms like atonement becomes At-one-ment or at one with God.

They deny that Jesus is the Christ, in that they think Jesus was only a man, who had the christ conscieousness, christ ideal.

So, the starting point with them is the subject of Sin.

First John wrote aganist the gnostics of his day, which is basically what Christian Sciencists are.

In fact, the other day I saw some free witnessing materials on christian science online.

1 John 1:8-10 (King James Version)

**8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. **

9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Matthew 7:22-23 (King James Version)

22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

1 John 4

1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

1 John 2:18
Warning Against Antichrists ] Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

1 John 2:22
Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist—he denies the Father and the Son.

2 John 1:7
Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.

The way I would go about it is invite them to a bible study, start with the book of John, followed up with the letters of John to make it look like an unit. The gospel of John will show them the true love of God.

Book: The Religion That Kills: Christian Science: Abuse, Neglect, and Mind Control by Linda S. Kramer

Ok, Christian science healing is basically changing your mind. They believe that illness, sickness is a false belief that they have agreed with from mortal mind – remember mortal mind itself is an error and really does not exist. The CS practitioner’s job is to lead you into changing your mind about being sick ( they call it praying but that has been redefined too ) to alining your mind with the scientific statement of being or God. They do read word of faith literature, and may even sound christian to you.
The main points about Christian Science.
Question - What is God?
Answer. - God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love.
Question - Are these terms synonymous?
Answer. - They are. They refer to one absolute God. They are also intended to express the nature, essence, and wholeness of Deity. The attributes of God are justice, mercy, wisdom, goodness, and so on.
Question - Is there more than one God or Principle?
Answer. - There is not. Principle and its idea is one, and this one is God, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent Being, and His reflection is man and the universe. Omni is adopted from the Latin adjective signifying all. Hence God combines all-power or potency, all-science or true knowledge, all-presence. The varied manifestations of Christian Science indicate Mind, never matter, and have one Principle.
Question - What is the scientific statement of being?
Answer. - There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.
Question - Have Christian Scientists any religious creed?
Answer. - They have not, if by that term is meant doctrinal beliefs. The following is a brief exposition of the important points, or religious tenets, of Christian Science:-
  1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.
  1. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness.
  1. We acknowledge God’s forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.
  1. We acknowledge Jesus’ atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man’s unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death.
  1. We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.
  1. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

Matthew 24:24
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.

2 Corinthians 11

1I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. 2I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. 3But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4For** if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. 5But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.” 6I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.
7Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? 8I robbed other churches by receiving support from them so as to serve you. 9And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. 10As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine. 11Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! 12And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13For such men are
false apostles**, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

Acts 20:31
So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

Basically, you may want to ask them what the ten commandments are, and discuss what they mean. Admit yourself that you have violated some of them in the past. And, see if they will admit that they are sinners. Ask them about I John 1:8-10

A typical CS worship service, consists of singing some hymns, sharing of healing testimony, and readings. They start out by reading a few verses of scripture here and there, centering those readings on a specific word. Then they will do multiple readings from their textbooks, the writtings of Mary Baker Eddy, and by the time they are done, they have turned the meaning of those bible verses on their head by redefining the target words. They close with a gerneric type prayer and a song.

Basically the key is they start with the bible and Science & Health on equal standing, by the time they are done with their readings ( they have a reader, not a pastor ) the bible is missing and the true meaning of the biblical text is lost via redefinitions of words.

Substance spiritual
In Christian Science, substance is understood to be
Spirit, while the opponents of Christian Science believe
350:1 substance to be matter. They think of matter as some-
thing and almost the only thing, and of the things which
350:3 pertain to Spirit as next to nothing, or as very
far removed from daily experience. Christian
Science takes exactly the opposite view.
Christian warfare
354:1 Are the protests of Christian Science against the notion
that there can be material life, substance, or mind “utter
354:3 falsities and absurdities,” as some aver? Why
then do Christians try to obey the Scriptures
and war against “the world, the flesh, and the devil”?
354:6 Why do they invoke the divine aid to enable them to leave
all for Christ, Truth? Why do they use this phraseology,
and yet deny Christian Science, when it teaches precisely
354:9 this thought? The words of divine Science find their
immortality in deeds, for their Principle heals the sick
and spiritualizes humanity.
Man’s entity
In proportion as matter loses to human sense all en-
369:6 tity as man, in that proportion does man become its
master. He enters into a diviner sense of the
facts, and comprehends the theology of Jesus
369:9 as demonstrated in healing the sick, raising the dead,
and walking over the wave. All these deeds manifested
Jesus’ control over the belief that matter is substance,
369:12 that it can be the arbiter of life or the constructor of any
form of existence.
Matter impotent
358:1 Is the woodman’s axe, which destroys a tree’s so-called
life, superior to omnipotence? Can a leaden bullet de-
358:3 prive a man of Life, - that is, of God, who is
man’s Life?
If God is at the mercy of matter,
then matter is omnipotent. Such doctrines are “confu-
358:6 sion worse confounded.” If two statements directly con-
tradict each other and one is true, the other must be false.
Is Science thus contradictory?

Basically, the above texts are used in CS to teach that if you refuse to grant the bullet or axe substance in your mind, then neither the axe, nor bullet can harm you. They will say, “how can error destroy error?” only truth can overcome error. The truth they have in mind is the belief that matter has no substance.

I remember reading that she considered marriage to be nothing more than legalized prostitution, but I can not find that quote.
