Or at least a conservative or orthodox Novus Ordo to go to?

Taking a little trip to SF in April or May, and I’m wondering if anyone knows where there is a good Mass and an adoration chapel. Scouting these out ahead of time always makes the trip more worthwhile, and helps me to decide where to stay.
There is a Tridentine Latin Mass in Oakland (right across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco) at l2:30 on Sundays. Sorry to say, that’s the best I can offer you. I have been trying to get one started in my parish, and two priests are able and willing to celebrate, but a notice to the people in the bulletin drew zero responses! ;-(

So is he overriding the pope, then?
Yep. But then again Frisco has always been a strange place quth even stranger people in power. There is way too much politicization there and too much kowtowing to special interest groups. Having heard Mass there often, I can tell you that orthodoxy is practically non existent. My best advice for anyone looking for a good orthodox Mass of any type at all would be to get over the bridge to Oakland. They have several over there:thumbsup: .

Frisco, you can pretty much write it off. Sorry to say that but its true.

jj - do you go there for Mass? I’ve never been to a Byzantine Church. Thanks for the link.
Byzantine Catholic Liturgy is wonderful. We try to go once a month on a week day. My grandsons even get to serve at the Liturgy so they are bi-ritual alter boys:D . Just make sure you use the little blue books in the pews so you know what is going on:D 😃 .

You can write it off if you’re also willing to write off St. Francis of Assisi. Please God, may I never do that. Since returning to the area of San Francisco nine years go, I find that I’m praying more to St. Francis of Assisi more than I’ve ever prayed to him in my entire life - even though I’ve always loved and admired him so much.

Where is Marin? Close to SF? Not sure where we will be staying while we’re in SF, but the proximity of the TLM will be a deciding factor in choosing accommodations.
Marin County is north of San Francisco (across the Golden Gate Bridge).

Oakland is a city east of SF, across the Oakland Bay Bridge.

San Mateo County is south of SF and part of the same land mass as SF.

Thanks. I better bookmark this thread so I can look all this up again in May.

Don’t forget Oakland! Any of these can be about 20-30 minutes (depending on traffic). If you are staying downtown SF near the Embarcadero, St. Margaret Mary’s is the closest and easiest.

HEY, PARAMEDIC GIRL!

Try: St Mary’s Chapel
860 Western Ave
Petaluma
Google this for a contact number.

It is a beautiful group of traditionalists who have mass in an old building in the wine country, about a 45 minute drive north of SF by way of the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco is not totally flaky; many of the residents thirst and search for Latin masses but it is the diocese that is lost on this one. So they drive north to Petaluma, east to Oakland or south to San Jose, all good parishes. It would certainly be a blessing to the City of St Francis if they would have a TLM or two.

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have more questions about my favorite city…the press gets bad but there are still some beautiful churches, a few monasteries with Adoration, a few Legions of Mary, a few faithful people who yearn…

I ditto St. Mary’s.

My family is from Petaluma (I grew up there) and while I am in Orange County for college (and I intend to stay…there are at least 10 reasons…some religious, weather related, career prospect related, etc…and each alone would make me want to stay) but I still spend a lot of time up north when I visit family. I attend St. Mary’s when I’m up there.

Does anyone know if Father Young still plans on saying Mass in Petaluma? Marinwood isn’t that much farther, but St. Mary’s is like…5 min, maybe?.. from my parents’ house.

It appears there will be a TLM in Marin. According to Fr. Z, It will be at Holy Rosary Chapel on Sundays at 11:30 starting March 2nd . wdtprs.com/blog/2008/02/tlm-in-san-francisco/
This is a great blessing for the good people of northern Marin County, but for the vast majority of residents in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, they could hardly have selected a more inconvenient location. Let’s hope that a TLM is available eventually within the actual city limits of San Francisco.

I think there’s one in Santa Clara…

Late last year, San Jose’s Bishop Patrick McGrath approved the offering of all the sacraments according to the traditional rite at the Oratory Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Santa Clara, with Masses said on Sundays and during the week on Tuesday, Friday, and first Saturdays (California Catholic Daily 9/11/2007)

St. Margaret Mary is indeed a wonderful parish. Speaking as a musician, though, I vastly prefer the sung Ordinary Form mass at St. Dominic’s in San Francisco. It’s a beautiful Gothic church that has suffered only minimal changes since the Troubles. The parish has many priests and nearly all are very orthodox and liturgically competent. One priest in particular chants the Mass with beautiful clarity of tone. No matter the celebrant, the Deacon and servers assist competently. And we’re heavy on the incense 😃

The Cathedral in San Francisco also has a solemn mass (yes, I know, in that HIDEOUS monstrosity of a building. The locals call it St. Mary Maytag because it looks like a washing-machine agitator) with chant from the Graduale. The schola there is competent.

I know your question was specifically about the Extraordinary Form but I really couldn’t resist. St. Margaret Mary is struggling to build a good music program, I think. If I had a car, I would have offered them my services. But there are good options for the Ordinary Form. You’re more likely to hear beautiful chant and polyphony in San Francisco than Oakland.

Thanks. I will definitely check that out.

Dear Paramedic Girl:

It is confirmed that the TLM is no longer in Petaluma but is now in Marinwood. PM me if you need details. Marinwood is closer to SF than Petaluma. Good luck.

Anyone staying in downtown San Francisco can get over to Oakland pretty easily via BART. Which station would one get off and how far a walk is it to the church?
