Has anyone read any of the theorists in the Radical Orthodoxy movement, such as Catherine Pickstock, Graham Ward and John Milbank? I think Milbank has some interesting things to say about sociology and trying to shift the focus away from a secular bias in social sciences. Most of these people are Protestants, often connected to the High Anglican movement, but they do try to situate their ideas within an appreciation of Tradition and c/Catholic culture, not sola scriptura. In some ways, their ideas are an attempt to rescue the good aspects of pre-modern scholasticism with postmodern analysis. I was just wondering if any Catholics were familar with this movement, and if anyone wanted to share their views.

Who on earth would want to contaminate Scholasticism with Postmodernism - nothing good can come of that…

Whilst it is worthy of praise that these individuals have recognised the flaws of the current social sciences; it is certainly not the right approach to take to cherry pick great scholastic thinkers like Aquinas; Ockham; Mayron; Scotus; Abelard and so forth and subject their works to what amounts to little more than the pop-philosophy of postmodernism. In many ways; leaving the social sciences in their horribly defunct and broken state would be better than spreading the infection of relatavism and academic misunderstandings and abuse of real thinkers.

One does not put a prize horse (scholasticism) in a pigsty (postmodernism).

I’m afraid I haven’t actually read anything, although I’d like to some time. IIRC, Pickstock wrote a book (After Writing: On the liturgical consummation of philosophy) that somewhat butchered Scotus in terms of her scholarship (identified HIM as the beginning of the end leading to postmodernism!) but gave a critique of Derrida (the postmodernist) which was highly praised by Benedict XVI (if IRC!). Seems like a praiseworthy movement to me. Maybe I don’t know enough about it? 😉

What an exceptional claim! I shall certainly have to read this book of hers.

Thanks.
