Do any women here experience rage/extreme anger/irritability around ovulation? As a Christian, how do y’all handle it with families and all? How can you tell its ovulation and not just a bad habit/vice?

I am stronger and have a higher sex drive when ovulating. I hit PRs in the gym. Also have more focus.

I get upset easy and worry about silly things the two days before my period.

My oldest sister suffered mild to moderate form of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

She never actually sought psychotherapy counseling though she did receive special clinical help from her family physician. I knew how difficult it was for her.

Never heard of it ( I am a man !!!). Before menstruation, yes.
What do women have is a stronger libido what makes matters worse for NFP.
Some women feel a slight PING, a light sharp pain in the ovary that ovulates on the exact time of ovulation.

When I was using NFP to avoid, I used to get moody during ovulation because that was when I was the more sexually aroused but wasn’t able to have sex. 😃

No never. I think it would be good to speak to your doctor about that.

Yes, I find that I have mood swings at different times during my cycle, even though I was far more even-tempered when I was younger, and could hardly tell from my mood what my cycle was doing. It turns out that it is not unusual for hormonal swings to become noticeably more pronounced during the years leading up to menopause. Not surprisingly, these mood swings are worse if my body is stressed in other ways–lack or sleep or exercise, more refined food, and so on.

Whether we give in to this kind of thing in how we act is a spiritual matter, but if the mood swings seem beyond normal to you (or your family or friends), I agree with aloe, who suggested that it would not hurt to bring this up when you go to the doctor. If an issue seems serious, it is worth making an appointment to have the particular problem looked into.

Irritability pre-menses maybe – I never heard of or had anger and rage. This warrants some looking into. Usually, when women ovulate they are more aroused. I always knew when I was ovulating because I felt a kind of “tug” from an ovary.

It was bad, my poor husband and kids put up with me for years till my menses stopped although (at 36) then I went to see my gyn doctor and found out what was wrong with me. A small tumor was growing on my pituitary gland which effect my hormones. I am on medicine to keep my hormones under control. It works for me and will be on medicine for rest of my life. My mood swings become less and less now I am under control even thou I am in 50’s now. I feel much better now than when I was younger.

Yes, I have experienced what you are describing. I had my GYN doctor check my hormone levels and they were normal, but she said that I still could get this way before my period. Part of it, is my marriage problems, don’t know your situation, and how things didn’t bother me during the rest of the month, but before my period it did. The doctor told me to buy progestrone cream and use as directed. I have not done that yet. I have gone to confession many times and talked to priest and some think that I use it as an excuse, but this one priest understood and gave me good advice. See when I get into an anger mood and rage, I use to cuss like a sailor. I never use to do that and told this to the priest. The priest told me to repeat this sentence every day, “Lord, take control over my speak.” It has worked. When I get angry or feel anger, I don’t cuss anymore. My anger is not as bad either. I don’t fly into a rage anymore. It was usually during a fight with my dh.

Is is a bad habit or vice? I don’t know. Only you can answer that for you. For me, I did not feel it was a bad habit or vice but hormonal problems for I did not respond to my dh or dd in the same way the rest of the month but only certain times of the month, so it was related to my hormones and period. Can we control some of it? I think so. Yes, the anger inside is real for I have felt it and won’t deny it was not there. I just think the anger is as bad depending on what is going on in your life. In my life, my marriage needs improving, so this factor had to be considered. Also both my husband and I live in chronic pain, another factor that has to be considered. Like I said, things that did not bother me during the rest of the month, bothered me during that period of the month. My dd and dh knew when my period was coming. I felt bad for I how would treat them but worst of all, I hated how I felt inside of me. I hated the person I had become. Do you feel that way? If you do, you are not alone. Do talk to your doctor and have your hormones checked as I did. If it all comes out normal, ask him or her what else you can do and then talk to your priest. Hopefully, you will get a good sympathetic priest and not one that thinks this is all in our head as I had some of those. It is hurtful to us but they are men. The one who understood for me said his mother and sister went through menopause and he understood. So there are some out there. Pray for one who understands. Pray that the Lord will take control of your rage and anger too. That helped me so much. I still may get the feeling inside, but it is more under control and it doesn’t come out in rage anymore. It is so bad for our heart and soul and health. I will pray for you. You are not alone.😉

I don’t know (yet) if that is when it happens, but I have to say I am glad to know there are others!! While my oldest sister has the same symptoms (or had, hers lessened in intensity after she married, actually) most people, doctors seem to think there is something wrong with me. I did find an Egyptian Christian doctor that found this very normal for me, as she said, “because I’m a good girl”. She said it was my hormones, it was normal, not to worry about it.

I have gotten the NFP book and will start charting, maybe I can find a connection between part of the cycle and my moods, right now I can’t connect anything, I just know I have the feelings.

I really am glad to hear there are others who experience this!

As for what I do…well, I used to just engage in very physical activities, intense cleaning, outdoor work, riding horses, etc. However, I started taking organ lessons (a lifelong dream) and now what seems to work is just a good practise in the silence of the church, playing the pipe organ is physical, for sure, but I kind of think the extra time away from noise, disruption, and people is what is helping me to control the anger, it just seems to melt away (not that there aren’t bad practises where I get frustrated, that’s when I stop playing and just sit quietly and pray). I always take part of my practise time to talk to Jesus.

Yes. I used to schedule my Confession around it, so I could overcome it with grace. Since frequent confession, I don’t really get it anymore.

Those who say they get a higher sex drive during ovulation, yes that is true. It’s nature’s way of trying to get you pregnant.

I’m young and single, but I know when I’m ovulating, and it’s like clockwork. Really, it’s going to be a real waste if I stay single for the rest of my life. I can just feel my biological time clock ticking away.

Hey, people,

Thanks so much for the words of encouragement and support! It really helps. And great advice too. 🙂

@Easter Joy- I’m definitely fatigued and have lost my appetite and sometimes experience dizziness/nausea- But these past five weeks been taking care of a sick family member with a host of complications. Perhaps that’s part of it. But will be sure to find a Doctor.

@Deafjazzy- I’m glad your family put up with it. I feel horrible about my rages which have been getting bad since last year, 2011. I get too angry for the thing that has happened, and later I am constantly apologizing after those episodes

@nana3- I am CERTAIN to start saying that prayer- EVERYDAY! Right now, it’s my “predominant fault” or the worst aspect of my personality. Just said (the prayer) right now ;). It’s difficult to know if it’s just my own bad habit, because the anger comes, and I think “Don’t say anything now”- But thn I do, then the other party responds/start arguing and it’s like a volcano has errupted. And the anger is so real in my chest! :(, and at times it takes forever for the nasty feeling in the chest to go. I NEVER used to be like this. Me and my family had fights in former years, but the level of “out of control” that I feel, like it’s taking over terrifies me. But I started noticing that it was not like that all the time, and that it may have something to do with my cycle- But sometimes it just feels like I’m looking for an excuse. You’re absolutely right- That sentiment, “I hate the person I am/have become” is exactly how I feel those times- you nailed it. How I feel inside is the worst part.

@Elisabeth51- What does “a good girl” mean? I’ve also never been intimate with a guy, so are you saying that it contributes to the rage, somehow? (Please don’t tell me that I’m sexually frustrated :p). I wish I could get a good Doctor to help. I’ll be certain to look for one (and a kind Priest/nun too!) Your advice on silence is just wonderful. Last year, I started going before the Blessed sacrament and I was so happy and at peace! 😃 But chaos came this year with my ill dad who needs constant care and other problems plus other frustrations (not being able to find a job)- and I realized that my prayer/spiritual life had vanished. I want to do a good confession and start again, and start visiting the blessed sacrament and keeping silence again.

@Deo Gratias42- That’s fantastic advice! I’ll be sure to find a priest today and to always schedule my confessions near/around ovulation! What a great idea. Thing is, the past two years have seen the most spiritual growth since I started taking God seriously, about 5/6 years ago. I stopped committing mortal sins (and it was easy, too! Not like the previous years when it was a struggle)- But now, it’s like I’ve developed other vices, (and gotten worse) like intense anger and great (it seems to me) spiritual pride. So prayer, silent reflection and sacraments- That’s how 👍. I just have to get up again and put my (spiritual) house in order.

Thanks so much, everyone!! Keep the wonderful advice coming. 👍

I wondered about that but was afraid to put it straight.
Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut.
Boy, Catholics suffer…

I was wondering but you did not refer to Debora123.
What she said makes sense to me. (Pardon me, I am a man !!!)
As a man, I also get furious when I do not get he chocolate that I was supposed to get…

You caused me to go :blushing::blushing:

Well, it does makes sense- I mean I am single and celibate. But I suppose it doesn’t happen in a way that makes it obvious, you know? What I know for sure is that around ovulation, I always remember men I’ve long forgotten and get nostalgic- Plus I remember them as very attractive and manly and good men and completely forget all their other problems and faults. I also get flashes of pictures/imaginations in my mind that are either impure or can easily lead there if indulged, so I shut them down. I only have them around ovulation, and when I first made the connection with ovulation, I was so relieved.

Perhaps the rage comes from…um…“not getting my share of chocolate” as you put it and also not indulging the thoughts? Perhaps my body deals with it by channelling the energy into anger or something 🤷. Don’t really know. But as sinning is not an option, I guess I have to find a way to deal with the rage (another sin) before I punch someone really bad in the stomach 😛

Blushing now…eeek! Yes, I’m 34, single, still a virgin and yep, that’s what she was saying. It is hard to find an American doctor that will support that as a diagnosis—it was not only her being from a different culture, but in Egyptian doctors are still educated in natural medicine as well as the modern, so they tend to think more naturally. From what I can tell just based on my sisters (there are four of us in all) everyone is indeed different. My middle sisters never experienced the rage/anger/extreme moods, but my oldest sister and I have. My oldest sister tells me that since she married (she was 49 when she married for the first time) she has not had the problem–not that she doesn’t get moody at times, but there is a huge difference for her. Me, I’m hoping God’s calling me to marriage 🙂

I will be praying for you, and that you get the time for prayer that you need. Oh my, I really can relate. I moved cross country in 2010, moved in with one of my middle sisters, her husband died of cancer a few months later, our mother who is senile has moved in with us, I’m working 8 hours a week—very glad to be employed at all—but my sister is part time as well…goodness. I definitely understand the family and other stresses that can keep you from prayer. I think the fact that I am learning to play an instrument that is conveniently not portable is sometimes the only reason I can get away from the house for something other than work and Mass. So, I understand and will be praying for you!!

Chocolate definitely helps!! My oldest sister has been a huge help for me in this, being able to talk to someone who really does know what I’m feeling helps. And, I’m actually glad to find there are others out there that experience this.

Not getting our share of chocolate…good way to put it! 😃 If you want to, you can pm me. I’ll be praying for you.

So, it has a meaning. But do not complain…you are well…you know that there is chocolate which is bitter…
There are no impure thoughts. A thought is a thought, it is indifferent. Tell you, nature made living creatures desire reproduction, otherwise life would disappear. Those thoughts, sorry to tell you, is your body asking for a baby. It is natural.
But as humans have conditions to reproduce, they are not animals, and as God wanted it in a certain way, there is a clash between the right desires of the body and the right desires of God.
If it was with me, you could punch me in the stomach. Men know that women are nor reliable in humor.
Why not meditation? Sit wherever you want, in a chair. look to a point, relax you body and just let your mind wander and organize itself and your feelings settled down. Do it 5 minutes a day and pray the rosary. Tell me if you feel more at peace.
God Bless You.
