hello all, does anybody not care about facebook, twitter, apps like snapchat, and all that garbage?? seriously where have the intellectual conversations gone with a human being? remember the 90s and how much fun everybody had? thats because apple products and social media weren’t invented yet and people could just have fun with each other!!!

no we live in a society that has turned me and probably many others into pessissmists about the future of socializaion. most people have turned soft and do not want to get off the couch and out of their comfort zone to socialize but rather say “oh maybe next time”.
am i the only one that doesn’t care?

I’m a sahm. My friends are either deceased, moved out of state for work, busy with their own families, or have stayed single/divorced and are living a different lifestyle with little in common anymore. If it wasn’t for Facebook, MMORPG’s, and internet forums I would be standing idly by while my brain atrophies. I’ve made some great friends online that I have been having wonderfully stimulating and hilarious conversations with via social media or phone for years.

Of course, I “only” have 100 and some change friends and family on my page. Which is probably why I enjoy it. I am selective when it comes to accepting friend requests and have no problem weeding out the foolish, the Drama Queens, or those who post tripe. 🤷

Once, years ago, I went on a blind date, and he was on his cell much of the night. It was the last time I saw him.

Yeah, sometimes it’s frustrating when people can’t get off their cells to talk to the person right next to them.

Also, everybody is often so darned busy, just trying to survive, make ends meet. A lot of people when they get home are TIRED, EXHAUSTED!

I like in a city with hundreds of thousands of people and, many times, even so have felt as if I might as well be the only person on the planet for all the good any of it does me!

A friend of mine sent me a picture of a family gathering where his brother and sister were BOTH on cell phones at the same time. He was saying that this is what it had deteriorated into!

Technology can help connect us like never before, but unfortunately at times, many of us can feel more isolated and alone than ever.

It’s sometimes a little easier if you can make friends who are a little older, before computers got big.

Sometimes, they still know how to visit, talk to you.

I had a friend, who has long since passed away, that told me that before all the technology, people would spend Sundays visiting, have dinner with people. Now, that has pretty much gone with the wind!

We could try to bring it back, but it’d be like a salmon swimming upstream at this point!

What´s hard now is that despite all these wonderful things, we can feel unloved, uncared about, unappreciated, and more. Mother Teresa said that the greatest hunger of all is that of being unloved. She even put it above being without food!

My family didn´t have money, and we got into games, that we played with eachother. We played badminton, baseball, softball, pool, ping pong. Now, we play against the computer, often take other people out of the equation.

It can be sad that we lack interaction. Kids often don´t play with eachother.

Remember how we also used to…eat with each other, too, actually break bread together? It used to be really fun.

I use all those apps and it doesn’t keep me from interacting with others. I feel like it’s such a false dichotomy to say, “Remember before we had phones, we actually got together with people!?” I use my phone a lot, and still have an in-person social life. I don’t know anyone who thinks a Facebook post replaces Christmas Dinner with family, or a date night with a spouse. People are often nostalgic for their romanticized view of the past, but I don’t think phones or social media prevents social interaction at all. If I want to have a conversation with someone, I do. I love that, via social media, I can keep in touch with people that I otherwise would have let slip out of my life due to distance or circumstance.

We at CAF are not that different from secular social media subscribers…but many of us are in denial.

Ask yourself honestly, do you check CAF nearly every time you access the net? Do you frequently search your statistics to access old posts to see if someone commented on your post? Do you often feel the need to respond, especially when someone doesn’t share your POV in a post you made? Do you find others annoying who’s post seem to scream, I’m an expert"’ or “I’m correct”, yet you often are guilty of doing the same?

For me, admittedly, the answer is yes…be honest, how about for you?

It’s just part of the internet culture we are living in, sadly.

I’m not really into that kind of thing, although I have a Facebook account. I mostly use it to get feeds from Catholic news sites and a few blogs that I like. And it reminds me when people’s birthdays are.

It annoys me to no end when people fiddle with their smartphone while we are having coffee or dinner. I think that is such bad manners. But so many people do it, they need to constantly be plugged into something.

I have no idea what you are talking about! 😛 😉 :o 😊

I absolutely agree with you. This is not a matter of either one uses social networking and technology, or else one has a developed, face-to-face social life. Let’s face it: we’re fallen human beings who can abuse anything, technology included. But that doesn’t mean the object of our abuse is necessarily evil or to be avoided. Neither does it mean such an object has no legitimate uses. I couldn’t imagine how someone like a real estate agent could get along in today’s world without certain tools.

Having said that, I can also agree with the title of this thread. Yes, I can appreciate the value of things like Twitter or Facebook or tablets or smartphones, but I personally don’t really care about them. I will also be frank and admit that I use the internet and computers a great deal, and although a lot of that time is educational, a lot of it is merely time-wasting, too.

But the biggest problem for me is giving too much technology to children. The potential for abuse in that situation is something I could not risk.

Social sites such as FB and Instagram have enriched my life with opportunities. I can see old friends and their children and grandchildren. I have connected with very old friends from grade school. Some of my friends post great things that inspire me or connect me with good Christian posts. I love the CAF and try to get on once a day, what I have learned on here has truly enriched my life. Would I allow the internet to take the place of a great in person conversation, absolutely not. There is a time and a place for it all.

Guilty as charged to the questions asked above.

😊

I have friends and relatives all across the country. It’s such a joy to be able to keep up with them and their children and grandchildren. Without FB I wouldn’t get to see the little ones on an almost daily basis. This week I’ll get to see their Halloween costumes and in December I’ll see the looks on their faces as they talk to Santa and open their presents. When my DD was growing up, we might exchange photos a couple of times a year. This is much better.

Right now I’m enjoying two vacations vicariously. A former co-worker and her DH are touring Chna, and a close friend and her DH are driving cross-country. I’d much rather view the pictures they’re posting every few days than sit through an hour of post-trip album-viewing. My co-worker lives across the country, so chances are without FB, I’d never see her photos.

Social media is like much of life; it’s as limiting or enjoyable as you choose to make it.

I think you are too hastily generalizing those social media platforms as being negative aspects of society. Because of those tools I’ve actually been able to stay in such better touch with friends who do not live near me.

I have not found any aspect of social media to have negatively impacted my social life. My friends and I are all users (passive or active) of Facebook and Twitter. Snapchat I’ll never understand the value of…might as well use MMS (but that is another discussion). I see my friends regularly. We all get out a lot and socialize. We use these tools to enhance our social lives and enrich the discussions we have in person. Or even e-mail discussions for those who now live far away.

I loved the 90s, but to say that the 90s were better because we didn’t have social media or smart phones is a misleading and pessimistic generalization. Maybe in your experiences have not been that good, but I think things are better now. Throughout all of time, there are people who say ‘Oh maybe next time’ and sit on their couch rather than going out. Those people are the same people who wouldn’t go out in the 80s, 90s and now. I don’t think social media is the root cause of anti-social behavior.

No, and it is rude and rash to tell others to “be honest”.

Oh dear. :o
Neo…I’ve been meaning to tell you…HA! I’M KIDDING!
I check it all the time, but mostly to see if my friends are online…
Like Neo, et al.
I don’t check past posts though…more like “hit and run” ! :rotfl::rotfl:

The way I see it, is those things are tools.

You can use it, or abuse it…it’s on the person and how they choose to order their behavior.

I live 1500 miles from my nearest family member and in a tiny (30) people isolated community. It’s 80 miles to the nearest supermarket.

FB etc make it easy for me to keep up with family and friends on the other side of the country and world. It’s not practicle, what with time zones, work schedules etc to do all this by phone or letters (nearest post box is 30 miles away). This way we are able to keep in touch on a daily basis, even if it’s just a few words or sending a photo etc.

I am FB’s biggest fan.

Moderation, healthy balance of internet and family. Manage time well. I ❤️ my CA friends.

Bet you’re checkin’ right now to see what I said!😃
Yes because this is a discussion. Do you randomly hang up on people in the middle of a phone conversation? I’ll assume not. My point is that Christian charity demands that we assume that everyone is honest unless there is concrete evidence of dishonesty.

I have no interest in facebook, don’t have a smartphone and don’t understand why anyone would want to use facebook or twitter in the first place. Why post all your personal information and opinions online for everyone to know and for facebook to keep forever in their database?

Twitter is an excellent source of news. I’ve never tweeted, but I follow the local police twitter feed, traffic reports, local blogs so I know when restaurants are opening up, or new construction project start. There are also countless other informative sources out there that will publish information or links to interesting articles related to the magazines you read, music you like, movies, or other hobbies. Heck, you don’t even need an account to view this info, it is just easier if you have it aggregated in a feed rather than going to each one separately.

CNN and other news sources will post stories (that don’t make the top story) a couple days after they appear on many twitter feeds.
