Dh thinks he can do it himself. But, he’d like to consult with someone who’s done it before.

Anyone?

What do you mean? Do you need to jack it up?
not exactly. The basement walls are cracked and starting to bow. Dh works for an industrial contractor and says he does things more complicated than this all the time. He hasn’t done it before though.

Usually this kind of job would run at least $10,000 if we had to pay someone. The brackets alone run several hundred dollars–we’ll need 14 of them. Dh thinks he can make them himself at the shop–he is a millwright–for the cost of the materials. He’s not sure about the placement, though.

How about making the brackets and then hiring someone to place them? That should be a lot cheaper. Or what about hiring someone to advise him where to put them?

What about tapping into the expertise where he works, and only paying cost? I am sure the boss would be okay with that for a good employee. Good bosses like to keep their good employees happy and loyal to the company. Materials cost and the employer-cost hourly rate for a couple of his co-workers to help design, place, and install shouldn’t be too expensive.

We had Thrasher come and do that to one of our walls. The hardest part, that I could see was locating the plate that was out in the yard. I can’t remember how deep into the ground it was or how far out. I know that the most important part was that we keep the tension at a certain amount and only tighten the rods up when the ground was not frozen. I remember thinking that it pretty expensive for a couple of plates, a big rod, two huge nuts and a special wrench to tighten it. I am sure my FIL and my husband could have done it. I can’t remember how far apart the rods were. We have covered the wall with drywall. I might be able to find the plates with my stud finder. Why don’t he have someone do a free estimate. They will come by and tell you exactly what they are going to do.
