Anybody have any special plans to celebrate the Nativity of St John Baptist?

Our parish is having a cookout Saturday afternoon.

It’s not quite the bonfires of the “old days”, but it’s better than nothing!

I would say that these days the Nativity of St John Baptist is one of the, if not THE most overlooked days on the liturgical calender.

I can never forget the Nativity of John the Baptist for this simple reason: my brother was born on the Nativity of John the Baptist, June 24, and I was born on the feast of the beheading of John the Baptist, August 29! 🙂
 
In my much younger days, I used to sing with a group that performed Medieval and Renaissance music. On the vigil of the Nativity of John the Baptist, also known as Midsummer’s Eve, we always had a party. We drank mead and ate goodies that we thought sounded medieval, for example, the onion pie I always made. Then we performed the “play within a play” from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” We put music on and frolicked among the trees with flowers in our hair, and long, flowing flowered dresses on (the girls!). All in all a pretty earthly celebration, with nothing at all to do with St. John the Baptist, other than the date. But we did have fun!

Our parish has a beautiful original oil painting of the Baptist - life sized - that is uaually haning in an office. it is set up in the center of our Narthex for people to view on their way in and out of Masses this weekend. it is arranged with nice plants and on an easel. it is very striking!
