Eastern Catholics, Orthodox, Latin Catholics!
Does anybody use the Jordanville Prayerbook and how do you like it? What about the Holy Transfiguration Monastery one? How do they compare and which one would you suggest?
Thanks,
FKC

I have both and like both of them.

Here’s a set of reviews of Prayerbooks taken from Byzantine Ramblings.

For something super simple I love the Pocket Prayer Book for Orthodox Christians which is included in the reviews. It’s small, cheap and has a nice little selection.

I have it. Honestly, I’m fairly regularly dissapointed by Orthodox prayer books. They generally have the same things: Morning and Evening Prayer, The Divine Liturgy, the Troparia and Kontakia for Pascha and the other 12 Great Feasts, the Preparation for Holy Communion and then a few Canons and Akathists and some other things. Out of all that the really useful things are Morning and Evening Prayer, maybe the Canons and Akathists, and the Preparation. They generally don’t have prayers for occasions, like you would need when someone was sick, dying, getting married, having a baby, in trouble, thanksgivings, repentance, etc.

I prefer the Morning and Evening Prayer from Jordanville over others, but for an intro to Orthodox prayer I suggest the Little Red Prayer Book from the Antiochians. Much more practical. Eventually I ended up compiling my own prayerbook, but the Little Red Prayer Book is the most useful, IMO.

Edit: The Little Red Prayer Book is the colloquial name for it, I forgot that. The one I’m talking about is the one linked to by 5Loaves.

Isn’t that what the Book of Needs offers?
I lived my childhood in the 50s in the Episcopal Church. I still pray sometimes from my beloved Book of Common Prayer, the 1928 edition. Beautiful prayers for every occasion. 🙂

👍 Got my first copy at a Greek parish festival. I’ve given several away. We ought to stock it in our bookstore.

The Book of Needs though is mainly for Priestly use. The Greater Book has a lot of Trebnik services and blessings which only a priest could properly say/use (I mean the blessings, not the Trebnik services. But the Trebnik services, again, are not something the average layman needs to have on hand all the time). Even the prayers in the Smaller book are bent more towards a blessing, which laity can’t always perform.

I know this thread is a little old, however I think my (name removed by moderator)ut is useful nonetheless. 🙂

If you want an Orthodox prayer book that has prayers for these occasions, I suggest Orthodox Prayer Book by Holy Protection Monastery.
