Anyone else depressed about Easter?

I am very depressed about Easter, because on Good Friday the Lord shed his Blood and that’s not fair at all.:mad: Doesn’t it make you cry to think about it? Crucifixion must be terrible torture, and he never did a thing wrong but he was still crucified! I can’t bear it.I’ve been having nightmares about Good Friday for the past several days.How can we enjoy Easter when he so bravely endured crucifixion? I can’t help wishing Easter didn’t exist.
 
I get depressed around any major holiday. The Crucifixion aspect can be a downer for some.

I think that the enjoyment and joy surrounding Easter is rooted in the remembrance of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, not necessarily his crucifixion. I doubt anyone would take joy in the fact that he was crucified. Well I hope not.

I don’t know, maybe someone can explain this better than me. I am not a seasoned Christian:)
 
I wish I could experience that for the Holy Friday; unfortunately, I caught myself being anxious about other things. Thankfully, I have good friend who encouraged me and I took all my trouble to Him and realized that my anxiety was the cause that Jesus was crucified.

Today, I find joy again and I want to be ready for the celebration of Easter.

Aw, I’m so sorry you feel this way. :hug1:

It is sad, that our sins… caused Our dear Lord’s sufferings. Certainly, He could have accomplished our salvation with a wave of His hand. But He chose to suffer and die for us… for one reason. Love. Knowing this, how could anyone ever doubt that He loves us? Sadly, there are people who still doubt.

But we know what He did… and why. HE LOVES US! So, be HAPPY and REJOICE on EASTER MORNING! God bless you!
 
Remember, that without the cross there is no Resurrection.

Jesus accepted his death because of His Infinite Love for us.
That is something to think about, and that would cause us to surrender our lives to Him.

We all have crosses in our life…and following Jesus’ example we need to surrender them in order to experience Resurrection in our lives, and for all eternity.

St. John Chrysostom said that the Crucifixion should bring us joy because it redeems us from our sins. We weep not because of the Crucifixion, but because we are sinners.

I think we’ve to remember that Easter is the day where Jesus rose from the dead and he could only do so if he died.

So we have to see it in the light of the whole event. And if Easter never exist, of course, Jesus would be justa great liar, because no one would believe him.

The Apostles did their best to proclaim the Good News because they have seen the Risen Lord. So why do you want Easter to non exist? :confused:

For Teeliumtrozzle - and all those expressing similar feeings - Of course, Jesus is God. The thought of His suffering at all for the likes of us - there is no word I can find that is sufficient.

But it can only be - based on what you’ve said - the epitomy - the absolute description of God’s Love for us. Do I cry? No. Do I cringe at the thought of the sound of the scourging and nailing to the Cross? Oh, yes. In addition to that, it hurts me to think of Our Lord tripping, falling on the steps of Old Jerusalem as He carried the Cross (I’ve seen them, and these steps were high). Even Jesus Himself - begged in the Garden of Gethsemane - that, if possible, it not take place.

But let’s never forget that as Our Lord prayed to God the Father for the “cup” (suffering) to pass - He then added - “not My Will but Thine be done”. Perhaps, that scene is the greatest description for us all - about what it means to be a follower of Christ. After three years of Our Lord’s Ministry and example - perhaps, it was that single moment of prayer before being taken Prisoner, led to the Cross without a word of protest or complaint - it was that prayer that defined what we’re supposed to do.

For me, besides the above, one of the most monumental moments - were the words of the Good Thief acknowledging his deserving to be there where Our Lord didn’t - and asking Our Lord to remember him when He came to His Kingdom. Your hearts should be filled with Our Lord’s response - “This day, thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.” Can you imagine hearing those words - on the first Good Friday - long before Our Lord’s tomb would be found empty? Perhaps, we should pray to that “Good Thief” who knew the purgatory of crucifixion himself - and then accompanied Our Lord as the Gates of Heaven were re-opened.

But if you’re sad that Our Lord was crucified (which while it was a Divine plan, I guess we all should be sad) - then know that your hearts and souls have truly been blessed with a love for Him.
 
If He had never been crucified we would have no forgiveness and salvation and some of us would probably already be in eternal torment. Rejoice!
He chose it freely.
 
We’ve got to remember that we are BOTH Good Friday AND Easter people, and not to dwell on the one event to the exclusion of the other.

Jesus shedding His blood which alone can save us from our sins isn’t important? We’d still be in our sins without Good Friday, so it is of utmost significance in and of itself. Others have died, but others didn’t save the entire world, past present and future by their deaths.

Likewise without His Resurrection on Easter the gates of heaven would not be open to us and eternal life would not be possible for us. Remember that on Good Friday when He died and conquered death the dead came back to life, but didn’t go to heaven. They had to wait until Easter. So Easter too is of utmost significance in and of itself.

So each of the two days is of equal significance, and really they are inseparable in any event, that’s why the Triduum is ONE season in the Church’s calendar and not two separate seasons.
 
Spiritually and theologically both the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus are important and one ‘speaks’ to the other and are primarily a matter of Faith and Faith with some understanding anyway.
Humanly I feel drained after the Vigil Saturday night and it could be simply the physical side of the long Tridium ceremonies and my human reaction to them. Usually it takes me a few weeks to fully recover and this could be simply conditioning and my “body clock” saying after the Vigil “ok - now you are drained”. It is a huge emotional “step” from the crucifixion Good Friday to the rejoicing of Easter Sunday.
Christmas and Easter are often times too when mental health is run off its feet with more problems on its hands than the normal caseload and possibly because we hold these two celebrations as times of Joy and celebration of Joy - and some though gifted with Faith find Joy and the Peace that is its foundation an impossible place humanly…and can feel guilty (needlessly) because of this which adds to their burden.

Easter was somewhat depressing for me since I wasn’t with my Newman Center this year since I am now in law school. My undergrad years were so wonderful being a part of my Newman Center and probably my favorite Easters. Next year as a second year student with less work I’m going to fly back and visit for Easter. I almost considered it this year but since Easter was so early it coincided with Spring Break which kind of defeats the purpose.

And Jesus had some pretty harsh words for Peter when he tried to talked Him out of the the crucifixion. “Get away from Me you satan!”

I have been having thousands of nightmares about Good Friday since 1960–forty-eight years with no relief. Sometimes I dream that these tortures are happening to ME! I’ve tried everything I could think of to stop them–foods, a new bed, painting my bedroom, avoiding violent programming, prayer–no dice!

The only thing that has helped cut down on them is my becoming almost completely non-religious. I cannot even think about God after 9:00 p.m. without having a Good Friday nightmare. I do believe that there is a God; who else could have made this complex universe and the scientific truths that have kept it running? Yet, I don’t want to be a 9 am to 9 pm believer, and a 9 pm to 9 am atheist.

My family is multi-religious: Catholics, Protestant, Jewish. I like that because I like to be diplomatic about faith.

I am wondering if you have consulted a therapist? Persistent nightmares especially the same or very similar in content usually means unresolved issues - if your nightmares are of a religious nature, this does not thereby necessarily flow that your unresolved issues are religious. I used to have a persistent nightmare of same content (not religious) over quite a few years, my therapist (psychiatrist - I suffer Bipolar Disorder) helped me resolve my issues and the nightmares ceased altogether with the resolution which was not a spiritual problem.

If you see a good therapist, he/she will recognize if your issues are spiritual in nature and suggest you talk with a priest and perhaps give their own diagnosis which could assist the priest. It is always best to ask a therapist if they have any problems with suggesting spiritual advice if they think you need it - a good therapist will not have problems with this…or, rather, this is my definition of a good therapist, one who will recognize that patients do have a spiritual aspect.
