Just a quick correction, OSF are not secular Franciscans, we’re religious Franciscans: friars or sisters. OSF stands for Order of St. Francis.

The Secular Franciscans use SFO: Secular Franciscan Order or OFS in Latin.

We all follow the rule of penance, but in differen circumstances. Yes, there have been many popes in the SFO: Leo XIII, Pius X, Pius XII and John XXIII are the most recent ones.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
Forgive me for the error; it can become confusing because I prefer the Latin post-nominals.

Our initials in Latin are the same Ordinem Sanctus Francesco. (OSF)

The Secular do Ordinem Franciscanus Seculares (OFS)

Some Franciscan communities use other initials to avoid the same confusion between SFO and OSF. In reality, the SFO is older than the OSF. The OSF came out of the SFO. We still have Franciscan succession, but our roots are in their order. The first religoius Brothers and Sisters of Penance were Secular Brothers and Sisters of Penance who united in a common life with vows.
