I always feel so frustrated. The networks try to represent Catholics in their main characters, but to make them popular characters, they always make them liberal, towards at least one issue. Usually sex before marriage. I just can’t stand it. Christians always write themselves as Mary-Sues, and the media either shows us as bigots or “thinking for ourselves,” as it were. I’m tired of it. Someday I hope to be able to do something about it. I have a hard enough time identifiying with characters as it is, I don’t need to be identifiying with either a perfect little Sue or an implied neo-nazi. Even if the second X-Men film, the writers manage to turn the most religious character, who was supposed to be a prankster, into a perfectly perfect in every way Sue.

Who else is annoyed by this?

Really??? Which ones? I never see Catholics portrayed in the media, in main characters or otherwise.

Hmmm, I’m not really sure of any specific TV shows. But I tend to get frusterated just by the potrayal of Catholicism in the media in general.

I keep seeing news articles about the Pope and his new twitter account…or worse…the ones about him canceling Christmas and then the ones about how he’s not actually canceling Christmas…I get so frusterated because I feel like it just makes a mockery out of the Church. 😦

I agree that “Catholic” characters on TV are usually ridiculous. Though every now and then you get a good one, and it’s nice to see.

Most people that I have met who have an anti-Catholic bias usually have had one good contact with the Church, such as a nun, monk or priest who personally inspired them, help they received through a Catholic charity, admiration for a Catholic figure, etc… So these might end up in movies too. It’s funny how the extremely mean nun and the incredibly lovely nun are two common stereotypes.

It’s so discouraging with us that we got a Roku box and intend to slowly reduce our upper tiered cable subscription to the minimum possible. TV has become an exercise in vulgarity.

ps a Ruko box allows one to d/l TV/movies off a high speed internet connection to the TV. No it’s not as smooth as what you have with cable but it’s an** alternative** if you want to avoid all the propaganda and social engineering.

I think your sentiments are why some traditionalist organizations suggest not having TV at all. You just can’t get away from worldly interpretations with it.

OTOH, it is extremely helpful for Christians to know how others perceive us, to ask ourselves why they perceive us this way, and to ponder how we can change this.

Why is it that Catholics are often portrayed badly or incorrectly on television? Yes, it’s possible that the writers and actors have an “evil agenda” to “bring down Catholicism.”

But more than likely, the writer has created the “bad Catholic character” because that’s what the writer knows. The writer has never met a “good” Catholic, and the writer fully believes that he/she is creating a realistic character.

What does this mean for Catholics? Obviously, we are not moving in the circles that television writers move in. And that’s not good. We need to be there.

There are Christians in the entertainment business, but many of the ones we see publicized are the “liberal” Catholics who do not adhere to Church teachings on many issues.

Why aren’t the “good Catholics” working in entertainment fields?

Because this is a mission field, and lots of Catholics don’t feel comfortable in a foreign land, so they stay away.

My daughter is a Catholic who is a professional stage manager out in California. She considers herself a light in a very very dark place. She can’t be an “in-your-face” Catholic, and she has to be careful about certain issues, especially the issue of homosexual marriage. If she is too vocal, she could end up blacklisted and this would essentially mean the end of her career–no job = no money = no food or shelter= coming home to live with Mom and Dad while preparing for a totally different career.

My daughter lights a soft light in her world. E.g., one of the things that she always does is pray backstage before the show. She doesn’t make a big deal out of it–no kneeling, no arms uplifted and loud chanting. The prayer is silent, and the Sign of the Cross is the only visible evidence of the prayer.

But actors find out about it, and so far, they have been touched by her loving action. They ask her if she prays for them specifically, and when she says yes, they are totally touched and grateful.

This simple prayer for fellow professionals may be having a huge impact on some big names in the show business world, even though that impact is not immediately obvious. No miracle conversions. But the seeds are definitely being planted by my daughter.

I think a lot of parents discourage their children from careers in entertainment because they are afraid the child will end up waiting tables, or because they are afraid of the child being badly influenced by a non-Christian business. This has to change. If Christians are to have any good influence in the entertainment world, we simply MUST enter that world and be the lights that Christ told us to be.

I don’t know about a lot of shows…but two I can think of where a main Character(s) are

The Golden Girls and Bones.

In neither case do they appear to be well formed Catholics.

Of course there was MASH and Fr Mulcahey…I’m not sure how I feel about that character…

I suspect there are others…

I think CAT has touched on the real issue. What is the majority non-Catholic personal experience with Catholics.

Consider the results of the last election as a bell-weather…The number of Catholics who voted for Obama…were THEY “good Catholics”? What impression do they give to others?

Consider the number of times in a year that we here lament the “C&E Catholics” …and the “Cafeteria Catholics”. Are these the Catholics that the non-Catholic media people are exposed to?
In other words…Most of those in the media probably don’t really have an agenda…but neither do they really have good examples to draw on.
Here I’m speaking mainly about Weekly TV, especially the always popular sit-com genre.
Those making major movies etc are a different matter and often times they DO seem to have a specific “slant/agenda/bias”.

But as CAT notes, it is good to see how others see us…and not just us, but Christians in general. It should tell us a great deal about how much work we have to do…pray hard and Love the world (our neighbors and enemies) even harder…all for the Love of Christ.

Well, yeah.

I’m also annoyed at lack of good coverage of our faith & traditions. I was watching Sesame Street do a special about Hanukkah and explaining the faith … Wishing they would do the same with Advent (a lost tradition in today’s culture) or Lent.

I guess much comes from groups coming up with money and bidding their story be told; as I see this web-site is doing for itself. Also, contacts and goodwill are needed to propagate this.

I am tired of the “catholic school girl” stereotype of a promiscuous girl too.

Those are a long way from being current…

Blue Bloods is another. There are episodes that have particular the oldest brother interacts with Priest to help solve crimes.

It seems pretty common to me. Here’s some just off the top of my head, but I’m sure I could think of more given a bit more time: The whole family in Everybody Loves Raymond is Catholic (they did a whole episode about how the main character would be the only one that didn’t go to mass), and also the family in King of Queens. In South Park, ALL the main characters and their parents are Catholic except for Kyle’s family which is Jewish. There’s another show that ended just a few years ago called Grounded For Life in which the whole family was Catholic and that was actually one of the most-often used plot devices of the show.

Of course in each one of these it’s like the OP said, the characters are still portrayed as largely heretical/liberal in some way.

Except for South Park (how did you find out the characters are supposed to be Catholic?), are any of these shows current?

by watching it 😉

They’re current enough.

I forgot another major one which is (unfortunately) still airing today - Family Guy. The family is Catholic except for the wife.
