Anyone Else Here with a Devotion to Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer?

Hello and Merry Christmas !!

After reading CHRIST IS PASSING BY, by St. Josemaria Escriva (founder of Opus Dei), I have fallen head over heels in love with the soul of this recently-canonized Saint and with his spirituality.

I have recently started praying to him for spiritual needs
(as well as the occasional temporal need).

Does anyone else on these forums have a devotion
to St. Josemaria Escriva ??

What can you tell me about your relationship with this Saint?
I’m new to him, but I’ve now ordered several of his writings after reading CHRIST IS PASSING BY, which was given to me as a gift.

It’s great that you’ve found St. Josemaria! 🙂

My husband and I are cooperators of Opus Dei, and if you want to be supported in the sanctification of your daily work, you may want to look into any Opus Dei recollections/circles/retreats in your area. You don’t have to be a cooperator to participate. All comers are welcome.

Certainly reading the saint’s books is a great start. There is also a good searchable website for his wisdom:

Though I have more of an intuitive relationship with several other saints (most notably St. Francis de Sales, whose writings I would also highly recommend, especially the Introduction to the Devout Life), I find St. Josemaria’s wisdom right on, too.

His writings are full of practical advice for living a Christian life, especially for lay persons.

I would recommend The Way, The Forge, and Furrow (available separately or as a set). Perhaps they are the ones you already have in mind. They are full of short bits of wisdom, grouped by topic.
 
I, like many others I’m sure, never heard of St. Josemaria or Opus Dei until the DaVinci Code, after which I just had to check it out. Now I’m gonna say something that many might gasp at: Thank God for the DaVinci Code! Upon studying their excellent website, and reading a book on Opus Dei written by a non-Catholic (it was actually totally neutral, simply giving the history and practices of the organization), and reading The Way, as well as watching the videos of St. Josemaria that are regularly posted on the website, I started praying to that wise and wonderful Saint for intercession that I might find my proper place and career path at my place of employment, which I was considering leaving. Not a week later, I was approached by the Training Coordinator and asked to train the class of new technicians starting in January! There is no raise, but I would be doing what I love- helping others! I already have so many plans on how I’m going to train them better than I was trained, and look forward to the day I can see them advance in the company.

I am certain that this blessing was solely due to the intercession of St. Josemaria. I immediately bought a medal of the Saint and took up a private devotion, and have received many spiritual blessings. I have contacted the only Opus Dei members in the area (four hundred miles away in Albuquerque) and am communicating with the husband. I plan to attend a retreat or event at the earliest opportunity. I’m praying to him too, for his intercession.
I am amazed at his spiritual wisdom and depth.

The books I ordered were The Way, The Forge,
and another book of his sermons (the title has slipped my mind at the moment) and I expect to get them by Friday.

I also ordered a medal of Saint Josemaria Escriva,
and when I get it, I’m going to have my priest bless it,
and wear it religiously.

What a wonderful saint.

I’m a supernumerary of Opus Dei-- and I think there are a few others floating around CAF, plus plenty of cooperators and friends.

I think he’s great-- first, because I’m grateful to him for all he endured and suffered to see Opus Dei established; second, because of the wonderful treasury of spirituality he bequeathed to the Church as a whole, which you’ve discovered through his writings; and third, because he’s taken care of some favors for people when I’ve asked.

Funny thing is, when I ask him for something for me, it’s always a “no,” but for anybody else, yes. We got my mother’s stolen purse back last summer while vacationing-- it was about to gum up the works massively, cause us to lose at least a full day trying to cancel all the credit cards, etc., so I prayed to St. Josemaria and told him very specifically, “I want her to get it back, right away, with everything still in it!” And it “turned up” in a stairwell at the hotel about ten minutes later, and yes, everything was in it. I guess the thief had a change of heart… 😃

Wow Margaret, that’s a great story !!

I was reading St. Francis de Sales’s Sermons for Advent and Christmas,
and I couldn’t help but notice the strong similarity in the spiritual approaches of both St. Francis de Sales and
St. Josemaria Escriva.

Not at all. It’s a classic example of thank-God-for-our-enemies. I always wanted to compile a book called Negative Witness to Truth.
 
Another great book by Saint Josemaria is Friends of God. For those who would like to read more about Opus Dei, it’s best to get hold of the book by John Allen.

One friend of mine always says, “What the devil meant for evil, God will turn it around for good”. I think you should compile that book!

I just got FRIENDS OF GOD in the mail on Friday.
I am reading it now and - of course - it is awesome,
and VERY convicting (( me and my faults )) in a good way,
a way that makes me start praying for the kinds of grace that I, being a pigheaded sinner, never even realized that I ought to be asking for.

Okay, today is Monday, New Year’s Eve,
and my copy of his book FURROW arrived today.

I spent about 1/2 hour on it.
Again, this Saint is simply amazing.
What a wonderful gift to 20th and 21st century Catholics.
FURROW, like The Way and The Forge,
is written in little 1-paragraph snippets of insight,
and so far, man is it spiritually beautiful and convicting.
After every snippet I felt moved to offer prayers.
Meantime, I’m going to put FURROW aside for
a day or two in order to finish reading FRIENDS OF GOD,
which like CHRIST IS PASSING BY is a collection of
his sermons.
I can’t urge strongly enough for people to read his works.
What a GIFT.
