Hey out there!
I am just feeling so violated. I hope this site can help me a little.
Their is this new channel ABC spark… and I seen the previews for a new series, ‘The Fosters’ and I was excited because to me it seemed like FINALLY TV was getting a show back on like ‘7th Heaven’ or ‘Full House’ with morals and family values.
Boy was I wrong.
I tried to get past the part of the lesbian couple being the main focus. I prob. shouldn’t’ve done that. Then throughout the next few episodes they begin with themes of pro-choice, sex before marriage and contraception, and then they even take a stab at portraying a ‘nice’ catholic couple (of course as the bad guys). I tried to voice my opinion on an article written about an episode with the morning after pill, and they would not publicly post it.
I’ve always felt like the media was choosing what we can view and how these next generations will view things, now I really feel like my fredom of speach is voilated. Can anyone help me feel better about society? Right now I feel like crawling under a rock and bringing my family with me!

I agree entirely. That’s why I unplugged a few years ago. You should give it a try—it’s so much easier than many people suppose.

We’re getting nonsense fed to us by the ton.

I’m tired of the politicization of everything, which I largely blame on the lefties (I’m just a vanilla moderate). It makes this an unpleasant country.

When was the last time any leader, corporate or political, spoke seriously about our common good and common destiny?

I believe its going to get worse before it gets better. If it gets better. Don’t forget the horrible persecution the Church has faced in the past (in fact still faces in other parts of the world). It may be that bad here before we realize it. Who would’ve guessed 30 years ago what we’d be seeing in the news today.

Sadly, there are quite a few people that are mad at the world and for much less than this. I would try to avoid despairing as of yet. Simply turn it off and find something more worthy of your intellect.

Listen, we are to live in the world, but not be of the world. There have been always three great sources of temptation: the flesh, the devil, and the world. Of the three, temptations of the world have generally been the hardest for people to shake, because they appeal to a person’s safety, security, and decency. No one wants to be called a “bigot”, and so we cave so as to not be outcastes.

But this bigotry against the Catholic church in the US has happened before. Catholic schools were introduced in New York because the public schools were Protestant-dominated and Protestant beliefs were indoctrinated into the students. Catholic parents refused to send their children to school due to the abuse of their children by other students and the teachers.

The Knights of Columbus was created in the 1800s because American Catholics were being discriminated against in the workforce - there was no anti-discrimination law at the time, and many, if not most, employers, refused to hire Catholics except in the jobs no one else would do. Fr. McGivney decided to create a way that Catholic men could provide for their families without deserting their faith, and so the Knights were born, along with the insurance program.

Nowadays, people can’t overtly discriminate against Catholics. Instead, though, they undermine us by attacking our beliefs as “out of date” and “bigoted”. This is because we profess that the Truth never changes, while our culture does not believe in universal truths. This has affected even politicians, as many Catholic politicians believe they have to separate their personal beliefs from their political beliefs, because they think that following their personal beliefs means that they are imposing them on others. Thus, they think, “My truth is good for me, but I can’t tell others what is true.” This is a false premise, pushed onto them by those who don’t believe in any truth.

As for the world, we must continue to pray for the conversion of all souls to find Jesus, love Him, and follow Him. That, and using our actions as witness, is the only way we will bring people to Christ.

We shouldn’t be angry at the world. We should expect such things, and confidently go bout our business, faithful to the small things God puts in front of us each day. In doing this we sanctify ourselves and the world.

Speak out and if no one listens then shake the dust off your feet and move on, confident that God hears our prayers and that he could change it all in a moment if it was His will.

👍 Yes to all of this. I disconnected my cable service and it has made things so much better.

When do they speak seriously? Probably never; however, they do speak constantly about the common good and common destiny; usually if not always, to try and justify their sins and the sins of others.

Unplug the TV, cancel cable/dish.

We did this about 3 years ago and have never looked back.

Yeah, the first couple of weeks you miss the tube, after that, you’ll be amazed how much more quality time and interaction you have with your family.

There’s a reason we call this world a “vale of tears” 🙂

If everyone said “enough” and cancelled their cable/dish subscriptions and demanded good programming, the providers would have no choice but to provide it, else, go out of business.

Thank you everyone!
you made me realize that I am not alone in this world, and IM NOT THE CRAZY ONE!
It is nice to hear your thoughts and ideas on this topic. Yes, I am now considering shutting down, and its nice to hear its not as hard as you think (especially if it makes us angry all the time… and Im paying for it, therefore supporting it!)
I wish it were as simple as enough people shut off they would listen… but I believe we are a great manority.
It also helps to hear that if it were Gods will…
thank you so much for all your help and thoughtful words. I will sleep better tonight!!

Anymore, I spend a lot of time watching ME-TV, if I turn on TV at all. I like the old Mary Tyler Moor and Father Knows Best episodes.

I sometimes get mad at the world since I am very overwhelmed by all they negative and sinful messages that are being promoted and defended. Sometimes I feel lonely and depressed and extremely anxious about the world while everyone around me is enjoying life.

Now, in regards to the Fosters incident, you are not alone meika. I too felt screwed when seemingly innocent sounding show represent shows that are not innocent at all. For instance, during the beginning of my freshmen year in college, I went to see a pre semester play entitled “Here today gone Tomorrow”. When I first looked at it on the brochure I thought, “Wow! This might be interesting”. But when I actually went to see it, it turned out to be a parody morality musical play filled with crude humor, sex jokes, and vulgarity. In fact, one of the most “likeable” characters was named Mark the *** hole. I didn’t even bother to laugh during the whole show. I felt so devastated about even entering this lousy play.

I get this way because i am very tired of all the vulgarity, crudeness, pro abortion, pro homosexuality, pro etc. that is prevalent today, not only in the media but also in everyday life. Maybe I not dealing it the way a true Catholic should deal with. I’ve heard from a Life on the Rock episode from EWTN that we are to engage in the culture and world around and not live in a Christian sandbox. Because if we do, then we let the enemy gain power. I:) guess I still need to know how to follow before I can lead.

Feel your pain. There are a lot of shows that could be just as funny or heart-touching or otherwise entertaining without either the dirty humor and secular outlook, or the political correctness. Funny how as a Creative Writing major in college I and other students were warned by our professors not to be preachy in our writing. Yet when I look back on it, many of them were being just as preachy with their leftist and PC-ish themes! Oh, well.

I suggest brainstorming alternative things to watch. EWTN of course, and Ignatius Press issues and distributes many good DVDs. I can’t afford cable and am not a big enough TV watcher to justify it really even if I did. The Internet is more my fave place to waste time, LOL! 😃 Where I live there are enough local channels that I can squeak by. I do wish I had EWTN but there again I can go to their website. My TV picks up the channels fine with a set of rabbit ears with the ring thingy.

So it might be possible to ditch cable and buy a couple of quality Catholic or classic DVDs for the same money. 🍿 Sometimes too I’ve seen DVD bargain collections with several movies for 5-10 bucks and they are grouped by theme - family friendly, adventure, sci-fi, etc.

👍 Right on.

I’ve spent far too much time in my younger years being mad at the world. I’ve found it to be – largely – an unproductive waste of time. Focus on doing the good that you can do. If you need a spiritual pick-me-up, look to the lives of the saints to see the good that is being done in our world.

Yes, there’s a lot of garbage out there. A lot of people are doing bad things and promoting things that are contrary to the Gospel. As Tim said, we should expect it. Jesus said as much. But we should be of good cheer for Christ has overcome the world (see John 16:33).

I guess it’s just as well that Marcy Walker is no longer an actress in Hollywood even though she’s only 51 years old. Lynda Day George, another former actress who retired from show business at a relatively young age, hasn’t been too fond of American television in recent years.

Join AFA/One Million Moms. At least they’re fighting this stuff.

Yes, but the people are responsible for this.

If you don’t like the trash on the TV then pull the plug. Cause whether you support channels that place smut on TV or not…you pay for them with your cable bill. It’s called licensing fees.

Just pull your cable plug and send a clear strong message of “NO”

It sends a better message when you contact both channels and sponsors to tell them what you find offensive and why.

Honestly that’s like spitting against a hurricane. Seriously they don’t care…they’ll scoff at you as just another evil, bigoted, racist, homophobic, islamophobic, Bible-thumpin, Republican nutter…they really don’t care what you have to say, because you’re just one out of millions of customers.

However if every Christian said “No I don’t want cable and I won’t pay” it would seriously get those executives to stand up and take notice when they are staring down Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Coming from a country that is predominantly Catholic in Asia…

I feel out-of-place with my generation (as if I should belong to their children instead). I think that when talking about the misdeeds of some celebrities who should be role models for the youth, I would be told, “stop meddling with my life, I know what to do!”

Being “blinded” by their glitter and glamour… yet many of my countrymen subscribe to them as if they were idols, even when on television and the movie theater, despite having been afforded a fast Internet connection at home and can afford a tablet computer.
