Recently, at work, I’ve experienced verbal abuse from two co-workers.
Without elaborating, their insults have been deeply hurtful to me. It’s made me apprehensive and slightly depressed to go to work.
This trial has made me reevaluate the way I communicate with other people and I’ve decided to make some radical changes. Before, I’ve gossiped about celebrities and other co-workers I didn’t like or blamed for some fault. Now I’ve experienced first-hand the terrible effects that malicious gossip can cause in my own life. I would certainly not wish this type of psychological turmoil and the possible ill effects to reputation on others due to slander on my part. I consider gossip to be a great, great evil; one that has done great harm to me personally.
From this period onward, I’ve decided to challenge myself to engage in conversation that is “insult free” whether it be gossip concerning someone or outright insults of any kind. I will not even be an enabler or eager listener of someone else’s gossip. That is why I extend this challenge to all of you. Will you try for a month to avoid gossip of any kind? If only people understood how much pain they cause by being uncharitable with their words, they might also experience an epiphany or life changing event in terms of how they speak.
