This is a new one for me. I’ve never experienced this before. We were discerning roles that members of our men’s group would assume for a retreat. When one of our deacons prayed over me, I felt all numb. As he was doing this I was staring at the tabernacle, and asking our Lord for help and mercy. Within a few minutes, I felt absolutely violated and became angry. I had to excuse myself to run outside and cool off. Wow. I am still shaking. Never had this happen to me before.

No, I haven’t. I’m interested in hearing what others have to say about this, though.

I’ve never felt assaulted by prayer but I did by several homilies–all from the same priest. In fact, my whole body would fill with rage as he spoke and then I couldn’t concentrate on the important part of mass–the Eucharistic prayer.

I am just now articulating what happened to my wife. I’m asking her to keep the children away from this deacon, under any circumstance. I feel like all my alarms are going off. It’s like a feeling of being touched by “wrongness.”

Scary.

would rather not comment except to say you should definitely pay attention to your feeling, and respect it, and it is okay to express a preference to your wife and children to stay away from that person, but don’t spread the story around the parish. It could be that the feeling came for another reason altogether, and you would hate to begin anything that could be slanderous. It is also advisible to discuss your experience privately with your pastor, for help with discernment on what really happened, and to explain your negative vibe about this man and the reason behind it, esp. if if has made you decide to decline working with him again.

Matas, I read your thread last night and have thought about it for some time.

I hesitate to share with you my feelings. But I will.

I think you are a very sensitive person. You may feel things that others do not feel. I have this.

You were not assaulted by the prayer, it was the person … right? The Deacon that you had a feeling about…right?

This has happened to me quite a number of times. More recently, at a Catholic Church in a tourist city that I was visiting, I went up for a blessing during Mass, and I got freaked out while receiving the blessing from this Priest.

Then I was involved in a steering committee on a new church start. (Protestant) Our Pastor had quit and the United Church had given us a new Co-Pastor, in the first meeting with him, I had some negetive feelings. I never returned to that church again and never told anyone.

If you think back, you’ve probably experienced this in different degrees. I have, some milder than other experiences.

Don’t set aside your feelings as nothing. There is a reason. If you feel comfortable talk to your Priest.

If you wish to talk privately, I will. 😃 I don’t really want to talk too much about my experiences publicly.

I would say to make sure you have no animosity or bitterness or resentment against this deacon that would give you a feeling of “wrongness” from his praying over you.

Was this a Charismatic pray over?
If so, perhaps you could talk to some people in the Charismatic movement for help.

I believe there are many possible reasons that this feeling could happen. The cause could range from the Priest or Deacon was bad all the way to an evil being attached to you, or the worst possibility in the realm of posession. Or even that you are a sensitive and you picked up on someone elses feelings in the parish as your soul was opened through prayer. I think outside of this spectrum there are also other possibilities as well that could cause the feelings such as exposure to the truth depending on what the prayer was. I have no idea what this person was praying over you whether it be a prayer to deliver you from evil or just a prayer for health or what.

I am not suggesting that you are experiancing anything in paticular I am just offering that there many possible reasons for this and that no one can really tell you what the reason is when they haven’t even met you and don’t know you.

This must be very distressing for you and I am sure it isn’t comfortable. I know that if it happened to me it would probably freak me out a bit.

If I were you I would seek out a Priest who I could trust and talk about this and also pray about it alot and try to discern why this happened. If you need help, then you can get it. If the deacon needs help then this other Priest you talk to could hopefully help him.

I just hate to see anyone not get help that needs it. Sometimes God gives us clues so that we can pray for people. it could be in teh end that he really needs your prayers.

Good luck with this.
Sarah
