I am a thirty eight yr old single mother of two children ages 11 and 14. Two years ago I got really frustrated with my job: not feeling useful or like I was making a difference…etc. I quit the job thinking I needed a change, new surroundings, something refreshing. Well, here I am two years later and the feelings are still there. I feel very despondent not just about work but life in general. Much of it is a why bother, we’re just going to die anyway attitude. I hate the feeling and wish and pray it’ll go away but no such luck. I’ve heard about people feeling this way around 50 or “mid-life” but 38!!! Could it be hormonal or some other physical problem? I wouldn’t consider it a depression because I still do normal activities, I’m not sad/crying or uninterested. Anyone else with these kind of feelings and how do you get over them?

It never hurts to have a single session with a therapist to chat and see if they feel you’re depressed (even if you don’t think you are). The best advice I got from a therapist was that too often if you’re not laughing, you’re crying. Seek out ways to laugh more - then you might remember why you bother.

Best of luck.

Oh Boy! Do I ever feel your pain. You bet.For one thing being a single mom with kids any age is stressful. And at 11 and 14 they might not be the best of buds right now which doesn’t make your life any easier. You dear, are probably at your wits end!!Please make an appointment to see your regular Dr asap!.Women can have hormonal changes as early as 38.I started having hot flashes at about that age,but you really need to see a DR.Your dear little angels need you more than you may realize…Please know that you will be in my prayers.

Yes, I have at times felt this way. I started praying a few years ago…this prayer…

Please help me to be of value to others today, Lord. to serve you first, and second, to serve others–putting myself last. Help me to help others this week, and to plant good seeds for others, and my family. Thank you for the awesome vocation of wife, mom, and an employee at "xyz.’ I am grateful to be able to serve you and others in so many ways.

It’s helped because we really are vessels with which God works through each day. I also make sure I ask God to help me clear away any negative attitudes I have to make room for Him to work through me!

I wouldn’t rule out any hormonal fluctuations…and it helps also to take a good supplement, especially vitamin B’s. They can help bolster energy, and do you exercise? That can help with physical lulls, as well. But, please try those prayers each day–they have helped me refocus…and be very happy in my job. I really like what I do, but it has its days! lol
