Anyone familiar with Matthew Kelly?

Kelly is just another “Personal Motivation” speaker.
i read his first book (i refuse to name it), and it contains heresy.

i`m friends with some of his early supporters here in Australia …

What`s the point of going on; i sound like a parrot!

Personally sounds like someone has a grudge against this young man. Hmmm…having listened to many of his CD’s and read several of his books…I have to disagree with you. His message is just what many people in this world need to hear. He is not a biblical scholar and he does not present himself as one. He is a motivational Catholic young man with a great way of speaking that catches the attention of the average Catholic. (actually his message is good for any faith) For someone who is used to heavy Catholic reading, you would probably think he writes different from theologians…well because he isn’t one. But that doesn’t make his message irrelevant.

This forum is a good example of how many different people think and just shows how you can’t base all your decisions based on other’s comments.

Lack of Biblical or Theological scholarship has nothing to do with it, either.
And im NOT "used to heavy Catholic reading". It puts me to sleep. Whatever Catholic Truth ive picked up has been almost entirely from “light” sources, plus listening to Archbishop Sheen, Scott Hahn, Father Corapi etc.

My objections to Matthew Kelly are based mainly on the testimony of PEOPLE WHO KNEW HIM IN HIS EARLY DAYS, AND WHO ACTIVELY PROMOTED HIM UNTIL THEY BECAME DISILLUSIONED. THESE WERE PEOPLE WHO WERE ONLY TOO READY TO CHASE AFTER ALLEGED MYSTICAL PHENOMENA, ETC. How much clearer can i be than that?!!! It`s all there in earlier posts!

The trouble is: if you`re determined to stick to your views, no power on Earth, or anywhere else, will shift you.
If people are determined to endanger themselves in spite of repeated cautions …

Unity Publishing`s comments are more than a bit worrying, as well.
 
Well I love listening to Archbishop Fulton Sheen, Scott Hahn and Father Copri as well…I have learned much from them as well…I would hesitate listening to the testamonies of anyone who fanatically follows the mystics etc…

All I know is that he doesn’t speak of that anymore and I will judge his material based on its merit alone…and I know many people who see value in his message. Lots of different people in this world with all types of backgrounds and I see his ability to reach a wide variety of people with a message that everyone could benefit from.

I have listened to many Catholic speakers, many who at sometime in their life felt that God was speaking to him and it changed their life…isn’t that what prayer is all about? Listening to God and responding to his call. Maybe he in his youth (and he has been doing this since he was a young man) had a profound experience with God and proceeded to talk about it. So what? While he doesn’t talk about it now…I find no problem in knowing he believes he is doing God’s will…especially since it has helped so many people that I knew rediscover their Catholic faith.

Well, I checked him out with some very orthodox Catholic friends at the National March for Life, and they say he’s good. “Catholic Lite” one of them said. Sounds like he’s reaching a younger, less theologically inclined crowd than me, but he’s reaching them, and that is a good thing. I think I will attend when he comes in the spring. I now know a couple very well-grounded Catholic people who are okay with him, although he would be appropriate for my kids or for me to bring a friend to hear, he probably won’t be my main “diet.”

I know if you go on the Catholicscomehome website–they are giving away one of his books…

so, I’m confused…for a returning Catholic–is he good or bad?

He is scheduled to come to our parish…so I kind of want to know…
 
I liked his book. If he is comming go and see him and listen. I wish I could. If nothing else you will either agree or not with him. Better to go and listen, then wished you had gone and then didn’t. He’s really pretty good.

Matthew Kelly is fine, as far as I can tell. The kids get a lot out of his stuff - it’s all the same stuff that we heard, growing up, from other speakers - he’s not original, at all, but he’s fresh and young, and the kids are listening to him, and they think he’s “cool” so they follow what he tells them to do (eat moderately, work hard, go to Church, be kind to others, etc.) 🙂

How does that advice look now??

When I first read the Words from God, I was definitely put off. But he literally NEVER speaks about that anymore. Whether at the request of his bishop, I don’t know, but he is not claiming Divine Locutions publicly.

His writings and talks are good. Motivation not doctrinal. He is not hitting the moral issues of today – he speaks about the issues of being a human person: resisting laziness, resisting pride, doing something beautiful for God.

His organization’s push to get parishes to GIVE AWAY books and cd’s to the overflow crowds at Christmas and Easter has been hugely positive. Many other organizations, such as Bishop Barron’s Word on Fire, have adopted this idea and made materials available cheaply to parishes for mass (pun intended) distribution.

Kelly’s FREE confirmation program is a huge improvement over what our parish used for the previous twenty years.

Still looks good to me! Matthew Kelly is good, but the preaching of Fr. Corapi is gold. I am so glad to see his material being made available on YouTube. I would love to hear him preach in person.

This I did not know about. I only knew that his is a corporate motivational speaker who also is a Catholic motivational speaker.

I agree: I like his stuff, especially from a motivational perspective. It’s light, easy, encouraging and accessible. I love his phrase “carefree timelessness.”
