I guess I know Catholic Answers is based there. . . but I have understood for a long time that it’s one of the better places to live in the US?

Is this true?

Anyone who knows SD, can you chip in? What are the pros and cons?

Where are you from? I live two hours north of SD, in the Inland Empire part of Southern California, and have a sister who lives in SD. She works in one of the hospitals. One of my nephews lived there for a while. It is kind of hard for a young person starting out and he had to live in a very small place downtown. The upside to that is he was blocks away from the bayfront.

There are several neighborhoods. My sister lives in Kearney Mesa area, which seems pretty nice. I stayed with her a few days once. If you move to SD, it is a safe bet you will have friends or family want to stay with you from time to time! Of course, you also can check out many of the hotels and give recommendations. 😉

I have visited San Diego many times, although it has been awhile. I love Balboa Park. If I lived in SD, I would be there often. The feeling there is relaxed, yet lots to see. There is usually a mix of locals enjoying the day and tourists. Museums, pretty architechure, small gardens, theater, and the zoo. Just love it.

There are so many places to see and a good varitey of restaurants. Downtown encompasses the San Diego Bay, Little Italy, and Gaslamp District, as well as Balboa Park. Just across the SD Bay is Coronado, which has a village feeling and a historic hotel on a public beach. Old Town area has the mission and a historic church. La Jolla has beautiful coastline and a different type of a village feel.

We think of the people in SD as being more authentic than LA, or at least the general atmosphere.

I like the feeling of SD being a Navy town too.

I’m in Illinois and play a lot of tennis, and we’re at a time in life when we can consider moving from the area. While California $eems problematic in several ways, San Diego gets good mention.

I do think I would miss fall, spring and winter, though.

would love love love and then love to live in sd.
no down side. assuming I am financially well off.
Expensive but not as expensive as Chicago.
Then again, I would rent, not own.

O bother how I love sd.

I live in San Diego and my husband is from Joliet. He says everything looks the same out here (brown), but he doesn’t complain about no snow for winter! San Diego is ok (I have lived here for over 40 years) and the diocese is outstanding, but if I had a chance to get out of California, I would take it and not look back. You can expect to pay much more for housing, gas, a car and your first electric bill will give you blurred vision for a week. We don’t have tornados around here, but we do get the occasional earthquake and wildfire (which I prefer).

I lived in Southern California for most of my life. Family members live in San Diego and I say ditto to everything you said. We recently moved To Gilbert AZ. I HIGHLY recommend this town and I have never known a better Parish than St. Anne’s.

We have seasonal changes in parts of Southern California, but they are somewhat short lived. You can experience snow without living in it, by going up into the mountains during winter. In San Diego County there are mountains and up there is an apple farming community called Julian. It gets some seasonal changes and snow. It also has interesting mining history.

I live in Yucaipa, which is near the base of the San Bernardino Mtns (where Big Bear is). This is still a pretty rural town, but increasing in population. Up the hill, about a 15 min. drive, is the apple farming community of Oak Glen. There is a varity of trees up there and they turn color in the fall. Of course, the apple trees look beautiful in spring. And it snows there, not often but a few times a year. Three weeks ago I spent two days in Disneyland, then the next day took a drive up to Oak Glen to enjoy the brilliant leaves on the trees.

There are actually trees on my street that have colorful leaves, although most have only half of them left on the tree. It is a joy to took out my bedroom window at the other houses and their trees. I live in a house that is on a golf course. The living room looks out onto the green with pine trees and hills in the background. It snowed in our backyard last year, but didn’t stick. It was my first experience being in snowfall. The next day we could look out and see the hills topped with snow. We took a drove to get a closer view, but didn’t go up further that day.

You might like to look at Escondido, which is close to San Diego (in fact, it is where the SD Safari Park is). It is less like a big city. The Welk Village there has time share condos, if you could afford that or it would fit your lifestyle.

The state government here is in the toilet and I understand it’s like that in California.

How’s the state dealing with it’s debt?

I guess also you hear of flaky stuff from California; does this affect you much?
