Anyone from Tennessee?

I am just asking because we may move there and our child will be starting school in a little while. I am worried about the education there (as I have read 2 reports, one saying it’s ranked 30th for education and one that says 41st for education!!!) and am therefore hesitant to move there, but it has to be decided by tonight/tomorrow morning. I just don’t know what to do!

I don’t live there but spend time there. I’d avoid the Memphis area.

East Tennessee is a beautiful area. I love the hills and the clean living.

I wouldn’t judge the entire school system at once, but look at each on individually. Alabama public schools as a whole are not very good, but in certain areas, they are as a good as anywhere.

Low taxes, beautiful country and a mostly good climate. You do have 4 seasons, but not 6 month of snow. Good compromise. I’ll think you’ll like it.

I live in a rural area outside of Knoxville and it is beautiful. There are some good schools as Bama has said. There are also several good Catholic schools. Housing is reasonable, but more expensive in west part of Knox County that some other areas. If I can give you any more info about this part of the state, you can PM me. Good luck.

I second Mary Bobo’s reply to you. My family lived in Knoxville, TN for five years before we moved home to Texas. I absolutely loved it and still miss it. My son graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School. Our priest at St. John Newman was wonderful, and that church has an elementary school. There is also a very good Catholic elementary school in east Knoxville (St. Joseph’s, I think.) Anyway, living in East Tennessee was a lovely experience. Even if you don’t make use of the Catholic schools there, some of the individual public schools are rated pretty high, I believe. Oak Ridge (outside of Knoxville) is home to many scientists. I can’t imagine that they would tolerate poor academics for their children. Alternatively, there is also homeschooling!

I have lived in Nashville most of my life and love it. We have great Catholic schools here. Several are staffed by the St. Cecilia Dominicans. Don’t know about the Public schools but we have several good magnet schools and some very highly regarded private schools. Nashville is the Athens of the South because of our great colleges, Vanderbilt, George Peabody, etc.

I LOVE Knoxville and Chattanooga!

Knoxville is such a great city. My parents had some close friends who lived there while I was growing up, and we used to go visit each summer. What a beautiful area.

I really like Chattanooga as well. It is a nice city on the smaller side with some great things to do, and it is pretty well located. Close to Atlanta, Knoxville, and the mountains!
