Just another day in the life of today’s “let’s don’t mention sin & guilt & contrition” priest. How can there be too much emphasis on guilt, after all, why else are we there? Anyway, the traditional form of Confession is the same as it was in the NO when I was growing up, in that you follow the same proceedure: “Bless me Father for I have sinned, its been ___ since my last confession… these are my sins.” Sometimes the priest will wait until you’ve finished with your Act of Contrition before giving absolution, sometimes not. I was very disturbed at the last NO confession that I made, when the priest told me that I didn’t need to say the Act of Contrition, or that I could “say it outside if I want.”
BTW., (for the poster who mentioned the HORRORS of Confession before Vat. II), I attended Confession under the Tridentine Rite for 20 yrs., always going at least once a month & sometimes more often. NEVER once did a priest shame me or put me through a “tribunal-like” experience. On the contrary, they seemed to realize that regular attendance at the Sacrament of Penance is not easy & did what they could, within the limits of God’s truth, to make it as pleasant as it can possibly be when one is baring their soul to another.
I can’t help but wonder who starts these gossippy rumors. Perhaps someone who has an ‘up-front’ job’ in the Novus Ordo & is afraid of losing it???
