My family is scattered all over the country. When my grandparents died a couple of years ago, I really said I wanted to keep in touch with everyone. We exchanged three or four emails and then… almost completely lost touch.

The idea of a family blog occured to me this weekend somehow. Anyone out there do anything like this? My thought is we could use a blog to keep in touch. Maybe the family could post but no one else somehow. I’d love to see an example if anyone has one and/or hear about how you went about creating yours.

Thanks!!!

To be honest, I don’t care for those so much. Those mass printed, chain letters that previously close yet now distant families send out are mainly annoying. I reckon a blog would be the same thing in a different form.

If I were you, I’d just pick a few friends to keep and then let the relationship with the other ones go about its natural course. The only good thing about human relationships is the human element- you’re basically saying how can I stay friends with people in an impersonal and distant, i.e., unfriendly, way, which is impossible.

If you like writing, then it might be a good thing to do anyway, to help save those important memories in your head, but don’t see it as a substitute for real effort.

A better online idea would be to use a social networking site. Forget myspace, it’s teen-themed and has tons of advertisements. Facebook is what I use. You can have all of your friends at your fingertips and keep in touch with them very easily, that site helps keep distant people a part of my day to day life.

I love our family blog!
I get so much positive feedback from our friends and family who are scattered around the country. I don’t write much… just little notes once in a while and add pictures so that everyone can watch my boys grow up.

I don’t think they’re anything like an annoying chain letter!
You send an email with a link to your blog… and if they don’t want to click they don’t have to! It’s not intrusive at all!

PM me if you want the link to ours… it’s really basic, but like I said… I get TONS of WONDERFUL feedback from our famil and friends! 👍

You could always start one of your own, and encourage family members to post comments. That way no one feels obligated to “keep it going”.

I have a personal blog, that makes it easy to share pictures with family members, and I don’t have to remember to email people. Anyone that remembers, can check out my site, leave comments, whatever.

Go to familybuzz.com/
Your family members get a username and password so it would be private to just your family and the cost is minimal…maybe like $12 a year or close to that.

I have been wanting to find a place where one can make private web sites/ blogs for free 😃 (password protected, not something someone could find by searching on a search engine etc) but have not found any.
