We have a very active St Vincent de Paul group at our parish. I’m not personally involved, but the group does great work for the poor.

You will find it very rewarding. The money they collect helps people of all faiths.
Ours is divided by zip codes. Certain parishes have hotlines that sort the call by zip code and defer the calls to those parishes that cover those areas.
Some of the people make calls on the “clients” to help assess their needs and situations.
The do wonderful work, restoring electricity for single mothers, or helping with other bills when a parent is hospitalized. It’s not long term help, and often, when someone calls every month, sometimes the hardest thing to do is to say “no”. They actually help people get on their feet and become self-sufficient. The society also accepts old cars as donations as well as $$$.
Others in the ministry meet weekly to discuss their clients, brainstorm solutions and count and report the money. At our parish, we generally run out of SVdeP $$$ by the 10th of the month. People have learned that unless you call on the first of the month, your odds of receiving assistance are sketchy.

I was involved with The Society of St. Vincent De Paul at my parish before I switched jobs and it became no longer possible. But I guess, technically I am still a member. I liked it. There are a lot of homeless in my town. I got to know a lot of them. Even already knew a handful of them. I use to like helping carry the groceries for the older women. A lot of the people who are not homeless but use the service are in a bad spot so they look sad or distant and that is completely understandable. Some get so happy and seem so grateful though when you hand them their groceries that it touches your heart.
I would recommend The society for anyone looking to volunteer for something.

I am now a member of SSVP (St Vincent de Paul Society) at my parish, the money collected in the parish will help the poor family, elderly, homeless… etc. We will visit the elderly home, the poor family, the lonely sick people at home, and we will deliver materials to the homeless on streets regularly. We have many members in our parish and different member participate in different activities every time, you can choose which activity to join every time.
I was a member of Legion of Mary before, both are international catholic organisations which serve the people especially the weak and the poor, but comparing with Legion of Mary, SSVP is more casual for me. So you can join SSVP first.
