Hi everyone,
Was wondering if anyone follows SB, how they like it, any favorite recipes, and tips.
I am starting today!!! I chose this becuase although it is a bit restrictive, comments from people say they lost thier craveings for junky foods. I tried WW’s but find I obsess about points and what I can and cant eat-ugh- tired of that. I just want to get this behind me and not struggle so much. I am at risk for diabetes and need to do something different!!!
I also figure a little sacrafice wont hurt- I can put a spiritual spin on the foods I will be giving up like white pasta-one of my biggest downfalls!!!
Thanks

Dear Friend- I have attempted to do SB several times in the past and I really love it. I seem to always give up after a few days due to the horrible synmptoms of hyoglycemia that I get and suffer through. DH is so sick of me trying and trying it, but I KNOW that it would work for me if i could just get going. I seem to default to WW every time and so of course that’s what I’m doing now. I LOVE so many of the recipes. roast beef rollups with horseradish mayo…grilled mahi mahi with roasted veggies, sooooo many good ones. we are going through a pretty rough patch right now and so my mind is probably not in the spot i need it to be to do this, but let me know if you want a partner! i’ll be happy to try again. also, there are good message boards on ivillage about south beach if you don’t want to pay to get on the south beach boards. twk

I love South Beach Diet! I followed the strict phase for 3 weeks and lost 10 pounds! The good news is that was over a year ago and I’ve kept those ten pounds off. I found a way to do it cheap and simple, and it really does help you stop craving sugar. I had eggs and coffee for breakfast, cheese stick for snack, chicken breast or steak for lunch, almonds for snack, and salad or more chicken and steak for dinner. The only problem with that is - I GOT BURNED OUT. The thought of those same foods over and over makes me feel sad  I have ten more pounds to lose to be “pre-pregnancy” weight and I know that I can do it on South Beach. I am so glad you posted because you are making me want to do it again. I can do anything for three weeks - right??LOL!!!👍

Take a look at this book:
amazon.com/Dr-Gundrys-Diet-Evolution-Waistline/dp/0307352129/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233129794&sr=1-1
It’s llike South Beach but goes a step farther. And it includes some good recipes.
Basically, giving up sugar and starch is always a healthy thing to do, for weight loss and control of blood sugar.

Twk, if you’re having hypoglycemia on a diet, you’re probably not getting enough protein, or maybe your medications need adjusting. Low blood sugar is dangerous. You ought to talk to your doctor about it.

Thank you guys. Viki, do you follow the plans in the book you showed???
I know I will be fine after the first few days. Its just getting there:rolleyes:
So if anyone wants to join me in this adventure you are welcome too. You can PM me if you wish.🙂

I’m in my second week of Phase 2. Phase 1 was a little tough, but P2 is really pretty easy. So far, I’ve lost about 9 pounds. And, last week was my birthday. I ate a couple of meals that were not SB-friendly. Still lost. I’m finding that I feel better on P2 than I’ve felt in years. I found that having a variety of things to pick from made P1 not so bad. If you work, the 30-minute SB cookbook is a MUST!!

My husband and I did South Beach–started on day after Labor Day 2007. Lost about 35 pounds each, most of it in the first few months. That’s TOO fast to lose weight!! And I was constantly hungry–stomach-growling hungry. I know some people say they never get hungry on South Beach–well, I was hungry all the time. Couldn’t stop thinking about food, and at times, I was sick to my stomach, I was so hungry.

We stuck with the diet more or less until June 2008. My daughter got married then, so between the showers and dinners and the wedding itself and all the get-togethers, we totally went off South Beach.

South Beach, simplified, is basically meat, cheese, egss, milk, salads, and veges, with some fruit and some whole grain carbs. It’s a good diet, but difficult to follow if this is not your normal diet.

I never stopped craving sweets and starches on South Beach. Never. I agree that you can lose a physical craving for these things, but the psychological craving is awful and I never got over it. Maybe you won’t have this problem, but I did. I constantly thought about cookies, bread, cake, and candy. It was almost sinful how much I lusted after sweets. So South Beach did NOT stop any cravings for me, but just intensified them.

Since going off the diet, I have gained every single bit of the pounds back, plus ten extra. I’m really depressed over it and I’m afraid to try South Beach or any diet again. In case you’re wondering, I weigh 262 and I’m 5’8", so we’re not talking about fashion weight here, we’re talking obesity by any standards.

I’ve talked to several doctors, who said the same thing happened to them–while on South Beach, they did just fine and lost weight, but once they went off it and started eating starches again, the pounds just piled on. It’s almost as if the diet increases the body’s ability to efficiently utilize every calorie from bread, potatoes, and pasta. I wish I could find the explanation for this.

SO make up your mind–if you are going to do South Beach, you are going to do forever.

One of the problems that I have is that I often get sick to my stomach eating salad. The various raw veges cause terrible bloating and burping. So South Beach was really tough for me. I gave up trying to use sugar free salad dressings–I truly hate vinagrettes, and the very smell of them made my stomach turn. So I stuck with my beloved Thousand Island and had a little better luck. Learned to use a lot less salad dressing. But still–I simply could NOT eat salad every day. A few times a week is the best I could do. So no wonder I was hungry so much.

And as for hot veges, I do better with those, but they are pretty bland.

Another problem was eating slabs of meat, especially chicken. You can prepare chicken a lot of ways, but it’s still chicken, and I got super-sick of it. Since going off South Beach, I’ve eaten chicken only a few times, and that was Kentucky Fried!

And I don’t like beef enough to eat it every day.

I did great with the eggs, milk, and cheese. That’s one part of South Beach that I like. Thankfully I’m not lactose-intolerant.

Fish is a mystery to me, and after trying about 20 different ways to cook fish, I never did find one that my husband would eat. He hated “fish nights” on South Beach. The only thing that I cooked fish-wise that we both liked was a recipe for Tuna Patties that used no fillers–just tuna and an egg and some chopped onion, and then fry it. We really liked that. But you can’t eat it several nights a week.

If you are good at cooking fish, you’ll love South Beach.

One more problem with South Beach is eating on the road. We go places, and it’s really hard to eat a bunless burger while driving! But we did have good luck eating out with South Beach. Cracker Barrel has a whole page of low-carb items, and they’re delicious. And Red Robin will do a great South Beach burger wrapped in lettuce, and serve steamed veges as well. Also, we found that a lot of restaurants, even fast-food restaurants, offer steamed veges, which to this day, I always order instead of fries. (I’m not a big “potato” lover.)

Anyway, that’s our experience. I think it’s a good diet, but I honestly think that the best diet is probably moderation in all things. Most of the thin people that I know eat everything, just a whole lot less of it than I do.

Well, I’m not doing South Beach, but I do keep an eye on my carbs. Gained a lot of weight after an incident in 07, so in July of last year I started exercising (ESSENTIAL) and was just careful about what I ate (sometimes I focused on the calories, sometimes the carbs, sometimes both to a degree). Came a long way, but have about three months to go before I reach darn-near perfection. The more you exercise, the faster the weight will melt away (but that’s a given). Lowering your carbs and upping the protein will give you so much more energy *to exercise *(experience talking here). You’ll be in my prayers.

I joined a website called SPARKS PEOPLE and it is free. They are great at giving lots of advise on losing weight.

I am a night eater and it is very important to add fiber to your diet because it will help you feel satisfied.

You should plan your own diet according to what your body needs and what comfort foods you like that are healthy for you.

I keep a journal of what I am eating and what time I ate.

If you love to eat the way I do then you need to plan a diet that includes healthy snacks. That way you eat all day long and you are not depriving yourself.

All those diets that are out there don’t teach you to eat healthy for ever. You need to create your forever diet.

Viki, do you follow the plans in the book you showed???
🙂
Yes, I’ve lost 10 lbs on it. Then I had to quit exercising for awhile as I had a back problem, and I quit losing weight. But I’m back exercising now and beginning to lose.

I think the problem with South Beach is the carbs it allows, which as Cat mentioned, continue to make it hard to stop craving them. Even the “good” whole wheat carbs. I am trying to give them all up. I think ideally 90% vegetables and 10% meat is the healthy way to eat.
Some people can eat carbs and lose weight but not me. And now that I’ve given them all up, I get sick and shaky if I eat, say, a slice of chocolate cake. Just too sickly sweet. For a treat I eat a piece of 80% dark chocolate.
The hardest part is finding things you like to eat without getting bored. It’s making me improve my cooking skills (I have a loong way to go)

Top 5 techniques for busting cravings (from Living the Low Carb Life)
  1. control blood sugar by eating protein & fat every few hours, at every meal & snack.
2.avoid any junk carbs make of white stuff, as well as those with highly concentrated sweeteners, even if the carb content is permissible in your program.
  2. Never let yourself become famished. Carry protein snacks like nuits, cheese, hard-boiled eggs with you at all times.
4.Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep triggers appetite & stimulate stress eating.
5.Watch out for emotional triggers for cravings, such as anger, depression, loneliness, or any unmet needs.Explore behavioral ways of dealing with them besides eating.

I think the explanation for this phenomenon is that carbohydrates interfere with the body’s ability to utilize food as energy, and cause you to store it as fat. Dr Gundry’s take (from his book Diet Evolution) is that it sends a message to our genes that harvest time is here, grains and fruits are in season, and it’s time to store fat because winter’s coming.
That had survival value in the past, but no longer. I find that if I eat any carbs except what are in veggies, I can’t lose weight.

I am typing one handed so please understand I am literate!!!
Cat I think we were separated at birth! I dont like chicked except for a few recipes, have the same problem with raw vegies, though I love vinagrette. DH is not a fish lover except for…tuna patties, which I am makeing tommorow sans bread crumbs! I could of written your post. right now if I am hungry I am gonna eat somthing. It is the only thing I am willing to try for now, I am in the obese range too…

any reducing diet, no matter what its composition, can lead to hypoglycemia in someone prone to it, or will almost certainly be a problem for diabetics on medication. That is why we a are advised not to start a new diet without our doctor’s knowledge and support. If we are taking oral meds or injections it is essential to test more frequently and to have meds monitored. This is verging into forbidden territory, medical advice, so we should probably stick to diet support group stuff and not go elsewhere with this.

my diabetic diet is more or less SB phase 3, which best describes it, with some tweaks. the standard ADA diet did nothing to help my blood sugar control, and the standard AHA diet did nothing to help my lipids. SB helps in both areas.

my favorite recipe is the cauliflower sub for mashed potatoes.

the plus I see in the SB books is the support for those of us who have to learn a new way of cooking. WW used to be so good for this but their program has changed so drastically it is not always true anymore. I think of WW as the Episcopalians of the diet world, you can eat about anything if you points add up.

I have some opinions but maybe somebody else wants to go someplace with those comparisons.

Thanks every one. I am on day 2 and struggling a little now but I know I can get through. My prob with WW is that I obsess about food and calculate points like a crazy person. I have a friend who lost 110 pounds 4 years ago and has stayed that way…I know its good just not for me. Well good luck to all of you I willsay a prayer for all of us struggling with weight issues.😉
