Anyone here read Flannery O'Connor?

I just finished her novel The Violent Bear It Away. I find her life story very intriguing, especially the fact that she was a devout Catholic writer living in the Protestant South.

Has anyone else read any of her works? Does it affect your spirituality at all?

It was many years ago when I read several books and short stories by Flannery O’Connor.

I remember her as having the ability to paint vivid pictures that are a commentary on Christian and not-so-Christian life in the south.
Her writing makes one think.
 
I’ve read quite a bit of her work. A few months ago I was discussing some of her short stories with my brother in Atlanta. He said that when he first started reading her, he thought she was great at setting the locale and dialect and getting all the details right, “but,” he said, “just when I’m really getting into the story, all of a sudden, somebody gets murdered.”

Once we drove down to visit her old homestead at Milledgeville, GA, but the place was kind of empty. Except for the docent, we were the only visitors.

I like what she said about the Eucharist on one occasion:
“Well, if it’s only a symbol, to hell with it.”
 
I read “Wise Blood” this past semester. It was a really good book to read and definitely kept my interest! That’s the only book I’ve read of hers, though.

She’s a great woman to quote. Another one that I like is “Don’t expect faith to clear things up for you. It is trust – not certainty.”
 
Dear BennieBoy89,
I’ve read a couple of her short stories, but I don’t think she’s my cup of tea. I’m sure she’s a great storywriter but I am to lowbrow to get it. Tom Clancy is more my style.
