Anyone in sales/marketing--how is the economy affecting you?

I have always been in sales and marketing…pretty much, since going back to work. Oddly, I have a degree in teaching, but never ended up using it.

I work for a global broker and even though businesses ‘need’ our services, it’s been much tougher to get people interested in taking a look at our services. I am wondering if this is largely due to the new administration, and business owners, etc wondering how the new healthcare program will affect them and their insurance. I also think that many layoffs are occuring and execs have their hands full.

If you’re in sales, I was just curious as to what you sell, and how you have been faring with our economy? Hope to be able to support one another with some words of encouragement, too.

I have been in sales for the last 12 years or so. I have sold mostly B2B technology services. Right now I sell a service to online retailers (I live outside of Detroit, MI, and thank God I don’t sell or work in the auto industry). Our service generates additional sales for our clients, and we get paid a commission on the revenue we generate. There are no out of pocket expenses for our service, so we have been seeing growth in the last few months as online retailers look for new ways to engage with their customers but without any capital expenses.

Even with a great service that costs nothing to turn on, it’s still a battle every day. The upside for me is that the last few months have helped me grow in my faith.

I think my dad was regional director of sales…or something…Working for some radios stations out here.

He got let go because a small company bought the radio stations from clear channel…and I’m guessing that economy didn’t help their sales.
So they couldn’t pay everyone, and had to let some go.

Of course, they station owners paid too much…so I guess the economy wasn’t the entire reason why he got let go…

Don’t worry though!
my mom’s a doctor and we’re still moving along! MY dad spends more time with everyone now anyways
its all good

Yeah, it’s interesting. I mean, I have done well here, but it’s just been tougher to get people’s attention. Insurance is cyclical, so there are better ‘seasons’ than others, but it seems like everyone is in panic mode…waiting to see what will happen with the administration, perhaps. The headscratcher to me is next to salaries, insurance is the highest ticket item a company purchases, so it behooves them to do their due dliigence to shop the market. This is my humble opinion of course…because we want their business!

Hi Steph, not sure if you were commenting to me? My kids are 12 and 16, so my working out of the home is not impacting. I’m home about an hour after they arrive home from school, and hubby works nights, so it has been a blessing for us, that I found something I can make a good living at while being home for them. I also really enjoy my career…it’s just been tougher these days to find good sales opportunities, and execs who are willing to meet!
