Anyone know of a good, free song recommendation engine?

I am very picky about my music. I scrutinize the lyrics heavily, but, I also care about how it sounds. Right now, I’m in a music rut, but, most of the song recommendation sites that I have seen ask you about genre and artist. The problem is that I am not a fan of any particular artist and my tastes span several genres. Most of my songs also have similar themes. So, does anyone know of a site that finds recommendations for you by entering in individual songs that you like and compiling a list of similar songs? Thanks.

Everything’s ASCAP/BMI-free (i.e., free and legal to download) and there’s a wide variety of genres: categories include “instrumental,” “classical,” and “old-time/historic.” Best kept secret nobody knows about. (The site also has the largest repository of birthday songs you can freely use, since “Happy Birthday” is copyrighted.)

I’m kind of weary of these free music websites because I’m afraid of getting a virus. Do you know of anyone who has used it for a long time and not gotten anything wrong with his or her computer? And, I’m not looking so much to download music as to discover new songs.
 
One option that I use is youtube. Hear me out: there are now youtube converter sites, where you copy and paste the link to the song you like and the file is automatically converted into an mp3 that you can save. Hope this helps.

I think he’s looking for recommendations more than to download mp3s. Am i wrong, OP?

That is a violation of the YouTube Terms of Service.

I would suggest to the OP to use Pandora. You can create a station based on artists, songs, genres, and then train it with thumbs-up and thumbs-down. Pandora is based on the Music Genome Project, and classical tunes can have 450+ bits of “DNA” attached to them for the recommendatiin engine.

I have been using Spotify for quite some time, and I haven’t had any problems with it.

I don’t know if you have already checked it out or not. I personally prefer it over Pandora. It has an enormous database of music, and I have found some rare finds on there, that I haven’t found anywhere else.

I mostly like listening to albums from there, so what it will do in the “browse” section is recommend album selections and choices for me, based on the selections that I have already made.

I have really eclectic tastes in music and will listen to many different kinds of music, so it has recommended a little bit of everything for me, including some classical music for me, jazz, easy listening, rock, and so on.

I would also think that it would do the same for individual songs too, that it does for albums. I am still trying to find my way around their website, due to its diversity and selection of music. 🙂
