Anyone know why sports seem so popular than nerdy pursuits?

Just because most people who are athletic or enjoy sports act a certain way doesn’t mean all do. Let’s not generalize because I for one would fall under the term ‘jock’ and I’m not some party animal or bully or unintelligent or unreligious.

God made each of us in His image, let’s not judge how He designed us 🙂

I’ve always found this tough to be honest. The active Catholics at my college are very cliquey and I am clearly outside the group. And in large part it’s because of being seen as a ‘jock’ and not ‘one of them’. It’s taken a while to break this assumption that a lot of people seem to have about me

I feel that academic pursuits should be more focused on, plus it may not be every athlete or sports fan,but most seem kinda dumb.
I haven’t read the whole thread yet, but sports very often ARE nerdy pursuits. You clearly haven’t watched my family argue batting averages or record hits and runs at a local baseball game. 🤓

Form? What’s that? Lol!
I’m sure that you can walk in any gym and see 7 or 8 guys out of every ten using bad form. A couple of those will be using downright destructive form. I never say anything. Even the floor trainers learn to be excessively diplomatic, or say nothing to the hyper-T guys.

Best form I’ve seen in a while is high school athletes in their dedicated weights class period. Some good coaches out there, teaching good Olympic lifting. The kids get me inspired to lift while I’m supervising them.

Yeah, Oly coaching tends to be pretty good. The powerlifting world, on the other hand…everybody’s trying to minimize their range of motion at the expense of joint health and muscle involvement. That’s the pond I swim in, and I don’t like the approach of a lot of it.

Oh we’ve come so far, though! I’m now 66 yrs old. I was very athletic in my youth but knew I had weak knees and needed to develop my hip flexors BUT there weren’t any gyms that allowed women! Some had a “womens day “ but only allowed us to use small lightweight dumbbells and the beater and shaker machines (remember those?). They didn’t want us to get manly muscles!

I love seeing women in the gym now…pumping away, lifting away and sweating like pigs! It’s just a bit too late for me. My joints can’t handle any but the lightest weights…and thank heaven they got rid of the useless beaters and shakers!

I finally convinced my wife to start lifting in November. She deadlifted 155 lb this past Saturday (started at 55). Still yet to transform into a muscle-bound he-woman!

Yeah, somehow the men back then just didn’t have great knowledge of male and female hormones!
😂😂😂

No reason one can’t be a jock and a nerd at the same time.

I had a boss who put himself through University via a sports scholarship where he played ice hockey. He graduated with a degree in computer science.

Jocks and nerds are not mutually exclusive.

Depends on the college. I agree with you about the Ivy Leagues, but just the plain ol’ state college will be happy to accept the plain ol’ high school graduate.

There are schools that will accept anyone with a pulse, but, getting in on a scholarship is another story all together.

Don’t let other people define you. Ever. If being nerdy is your thing, then embrace it and go for it! Only consider God’s judgement, not others.

Like these? I remember them, lol!

That’s the shaker! It was great for mixing up stomach juices but did nothing else. Yet women subjected themselves to believing they were shaking the fat off.😂😂😂. What a waste of electricity and a fan belt!

Cos footbaaaaaaawl and such has been around forever. Meanwhile computers and comics and such only for awhile. It’s also easier to get into sports. Nerd pursuits are often solo affairs.

Except for Dungeons and Dragons. And folk like Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel plays that so… I don’t know if I’d denigrate it in their presence.

I don’t think “nerdy” things are less popular really. It just takes time for new stuff to catch on. Gadgets and games are huge. And stuff like retro tech and comics and such are getting way, way more popular.

And then we have me, with a master’s in civil engineering from Johns Hopkins and running a strength coaching business on the side.

We nerds are ubiquitous in the sports world.
I have a degree in computer science and have worked at two of the most notable “nerd” companies there are. However, I probably spent more time playing soccer growing up than on a computer. Actually, I really wasn’t one of the “nerds” growing up. I was too athletic. I had to cut back on sports a lot, though, once some physical problems started preventing me from playing soccer or basketball, the two sports I put the most time into. I still like other sports, though, just so long as they don’t put too much stress on my ankles.
You clearly haven’t watched my family argue batting averages or record hits and runs at a local baseball game. 🤓
I think baseball and golf attract a very different audience than football, basketball, or hockey.

It could be.

I do think that the “dumb jock” stereotype needs to go by the wayside. Being an athlete in any sport or event actually requires a lot of quick thinking, clever dexterity, and strategizing. Kinesthetic intelligence is indeed intelligence.
