In the forest or the mountain. Preferably a forest located in a mountain. Doesn’t it make you feel closer to God?

Yes. Hiking is good. However, I always recommend being armed on long hike if you’re alone.

Yeah I’m from Spain, not too keen on bearing arms on this side of the ocean.

Well, a large Bowie knife will suffice. Providing you have a legitimate excuse to carry it.

I have not nor do I desire such excuse. But thanks for the tip friend. I’ll just avoid hiking alone

I do like hiking, especially in the woods and mountains. It’s nice to get above treeline – better view of the land, less bugs, cooler – but there is more wildlife to see in the woods, and you don’t need sunscreen.

While I do marvel at God’s creation as I hike, I can’t say it makes me feel closer to God.

I hike occasionally, but there’s normally a geocache at the end of the hike.

I must say that I have experienced beautiful vistas that have made me marvel at God’s creation but I can’t honestly say that it has made me feel closer to God.

I guess it all depends how you define “getting closer to God”. I find it clears my mind and I sometimes start thinking about Jesus

Getting away from people and distractions certainly helps me to clear my mind and think about things.

The physical exertion and challenges of the terrain also help to provide a good setting for what I call unstructured (undirected?) thoughtfulness.

Yeah, be careful. People go missing all the time in the wilderness. I work for a heavily forested Metropolitan Park and the employees are always sent out in groups of two or more.

David Paulides, author of Missing 411, gave some interesting interviews concerning people going missing in the USA National Parks. I Don’t agree with his conclusions; however, it’s undeniable that the woods are dangerous.

Perhaps it’s because I’m a woodsman, but I’m always suspicious of the Forest.

Yes, indeed. I have a preference for open views, though the sun exposure can be a bit much. Views take the edge off the climbing. Best hike is a mix of forest for shade and open vistas, preferably at a height. (lakes a plus) But valleys and basins, crossing streams, etc. (barefoot is best) can also just be a knockout. Especially if you get in there before the wild flowers all die out. I do feel closer to God. For that matter I can sit in a rose garden and feel closer to God. Assuming it’s in bloom, nicely done, in good shape, etc. Not unlike being in Church - JP II held Mass in the forest. And, no, this is not pantheism. Think incarnation, Real Presence - the presence of God revealed through matter, the wonders of His creation. Happy trails!

To be honest I don’t usually like the outdoors. I burn easily and I’m out of shape. But I still like hiking because it allows me to see God’s creation up close.

It sure does. I also LOVE looking at the sky, both clouds and stars, but especially stars. The world is just too beautiful, it’s very hard to understand what a being who created that must be like. Far more amazing than I could ever imagine in 10 million lives, and to think I keep sinning against Him like it’s no big deal 😭
