So I recently found out there is a local Relevant Radio station, somewhat on the border of my listening area, but close enough that I can hear on my car radio in the evening; and I know they have a webcast as well. Can anyone recommend any specific shows?

If it’s Protestant-oriented like Air1 and plays songs that praise OSAS and other non-Catholic beliefs, then no. I wish I knew why so many Catholics feel so obligated to listen to music that is so OSAS and sola scriptura to its core. Wouldn’t EWTN or C/A or Immaculate Heart radio be more Catholic-appropriate?

Considering that Relevant Radio advertises itself as “Talk Radio for Catholic Life”, to say nothing of the advertising card I received for it with a giant picture of St. Mother Teresa on it, I doubt it is anything “praising OSAS and other non-Catholic beliefs”. Some of the talk shows look interesting. I’ll admit I have not really checked it out yet though. I like to listen to WAOB (We Are One Body) but I only get it over part of the turnpike on my drives.

I don’t have a station to listen to so I used to listen to the shows by podcast. It’s been awhile since I have listened because my mp3 player broke. My favorite was The Inner Life. Kind of a spiritual direction show. Excellent. Father Simon Says show was very good too. He has commentary on the daily Mass readings and then takes calls. Those two shows I listened to the most.

Relevant Radio is very much like EWTN Radio: solidly orthodox Catholic talk radio. I listen almost every day and donate regularly.

My favorite show by far is Father Simon Says with Fr. Richard Simon of St. Lambert’s Parish in Skokie, IL. It’s on Mon-Sat 11am-12pm ET with an encore 7-8pm ET.

I’ve been listening for many years. My parish is about three miles from St. Lambert’s. I attend mass there occasionally. Fr. Simon’s homilies are somewhere between thought provoking and terrific–often both. Plus he has a terrific sense of humor. 😃 He is a language expert, having been Latin and Greek professor to seminarians for many years in Chicago. Fluent in Hebrew as well.

Msgr Stuart Swetland is a convert and former Naval Officer. Graduated near the top of his class at Annapolis. He hosts “Go ask your Father” during lunch hour daily. This is a question and answer show on the faith. He is a brilliant man who has a wonderful demeanor on the radio.

Really, all the shows are great, and orthodox. You can download the app from their website www.relevantradio.com as all the shows have daily podcasts.

Highly recommended.

I second the recommendation for “Go Ask Your Father” and " Fr. Simon Says. " Both of those priests are great, and I have learned a lot by listening to them.

Been listening for years, I agree 1. Inner Life, 2. Father Simon, and will add 3. Drew Mariani (at 3pm he prays the Divine Mercy Chaplet).

Even though it was announced in January, I just learned that Relevant Radio and Immaculate Heart Radio are merging, which should make it finally national (RR is mostly in the eastern and midwestern US, while IH is mostly in the west." I’d expect to see some shuffling of shows when that happens.

Press release: Catholic Radio Organizations Plan to Unite

“Relevant Radio® and Immaculate Heart Radio have announced their intention to merge. The united corporation will be Immaculate Heart Media d/b/a Relevant Radio® and will broadcast inspirational radio programs over 108 AM and FM radio stations and translators in 36 states reaching 133 Million souls. Additionally, all programs will be live-streamed and available on podcast through multiple internet platforms including websites, mobile apps, and social media portals.”

Well so far I have had an enjoyable time listening to the Morning Air show on my commute to work, as that is quite early in the morning and actually has better reception than the evening.

I am not as impressed so far with the afternoon show by Drew Mariani, as it seems it is meant to compete with the more secular conservative talk shows and doesn’t seem as expressly “Catholic” as the other shows, except for the Divine Mercy half hour. I really find the DM Chaplet to be soothing and simple, short and sweet and to the point.

There is also a Rosary half hour later in the day, but I personally don’t find the Rosary to be as personally inspiring. I know, scandalous! 😛 One reason I’m not Catholic, really. I respect others practicing Marian devotion, but many Catholics seem to see it as essentially required, and I am uncomfortable with that.

(And yes, I know the DM Chaplet includes 1 Hail Mary, I have no issue with that, and that the Rosary also invites us to meditate on Christ’s Sorrowful Passion as well, I just have a hard time thinking of Christ while praying to Mary. Maybe it’s my short attention span, but I find myself drawn to the DMC more than the Rosary at this time.)

Interesting that RR and IR are merging. I know CA Live is broadcast on IR, and it would be nice to be able to actually listen to it live. Sadly, the livestream link on Catholic.com doesn’t work for me.

A lot of us grew up with the Rosary and regard Mary on some level as our Mother so when people say they’re not into the Rosary it is kind of like having someone not like your mom’s cooking, or not get along with your mom who gets along with most of your friends. I try to understand that some people come to Catholicism from another tradition and maybe they are more comfortable with Scripture or praying directly to Jesus, also I remind myself that there were many Saints whose primary devotion was to Jesus, but I love Mary so much it’s hard to “get it” when someone doesn’t share that love. Also, my dad was a convert from two Protestant denominations and for whatever reason he really liked the Rosary and said it every day. I don’t know why - I never discussed it with him - I just remember him constantly saying that rosary.
