I’m looking for some recommendations for a good Catholic book regarding managing emotions, and particularly one that has nothing to do with pop psychology. etc. Alot of the books out there on this topic have a psychology and/or materialist bent. Because of your genetic disposition, or your brain this, or your brain that. Blah, ,blah, blah. Even Christian books on this topic lean that way, I’m finding, and it’s shocking to see that not many address this topic from the spiritual perspective. Did any of the saints write on this topic, or address it in some way in their writings?

I would love to hear any suggestions you might have. Thanks!

Most older spiritual writings spoke of the passions. A modern author that may be helpful is Dietrich Von hildebrand.

Thanks, Mongo! I also checked out Introduction To The Devout Life. I really appreciate your reply!

St. John of the Cross discusses emotions/passions.

I have not read the following, but have read a different book by these two, and I found it informative.

The Emotions God Gave You: A Guide for Catholics to Healthy and Holy Living by Art and Laraine Bennett

I caution you not to dismiss resources because they acknowledge the roles of biology in this.

The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the “form” of the body: i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living, human body; spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature. - Catechism of the Catholic Church 365

It is not necessary to throw out the baby with the bathwater. There is some very good psychology that can be used by Christians.

This might be a good place for your search on ancient writers.

My Favorite book is MInd Over Mood.

It is not Christian, but it is an excellent step by step guide on how to 'be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2)
