I gotta admit, even I might be convinced if I didn’t know the Bible and early church father’s teachings. Alot of Protestants use the fact that alot of Catholics don’t study the Bible as much as they do, or at least not with the intention of beating others over the head with it, to convince Catholics who are not strong in their faith to “get Born Again and Receive Jesus as your Personal Lord and Savior”. I know, because I, though from a Catholic family, was eased into fundamentalist Protestant churches because of my ignorance. Funny thing is, that after fifteen years of being a Protestant and reading the Bible more and more, I actually became convinced. from the Bible, that Catholicism was the truth. I think that there should be a much greater movement within the Church to encourage Bible study and Church Doctrine, and how they are related and confirm each other. Let’s not lose any more borderline Catholics.
To validly defend the Church from attacks by people who claim to use the Bible as their sole authority, you just have to know the Bible well enough to put up a defense.

So true. I feel like there’s a strong move afoot in the western world to do just what you’re describing. When I became Catholic 20-some years ago, there wasn’t any EWTN in my area. No Catholic radio. No Catholic Answers (no internet). No Catholic apologists. Now, it is far, far different.

In those days I was the only convert anyone had seen in ages that wasn’t converting as a result of marriage, and there weren’t even very many of those. This was in upstate New York.

There are huge resources available now for Catholics to learn how to defend the faith against the fundamentalists. I truly do expect a surge of conversions in the years ahead, as more and more of these fundamentalists realize that the Catholic Church has what they’ve been looking for.

I heard a good quote last weekend.

“Fundamentalism: overcompensation for doubt”

👍

Most of the sources he references are from newspapers and tv programs, and the others are by Dr. Loraine Boettner, a rabid anti-catholic, and former Catholics. He does not give any references from the Catechism, or any Church encyclicals or teachings. Go figure.

Well, this is just so much drivel. What the writer says about Galileo is ridiculous. But here’s a real clincher:

""The major difference is that the Roman Catholic Church added a collection of books and passages known as the “Apocrypha” to their Old Testament during the sixteenth century. ""

Aw fer cryin’ out loud. These types of fundamentalists are truly an embarrassment to themselves. I do believe they’ll make it to Heaven, but beeruther are they going to have some ‘splainin’ to do to the Almighty (and to us) for their utter knuckleheadedness while they were wearing the skin.

I see the author is someone named “J.D. Martinez.” Most of the newspaper citations are from the Albuquerque Journal. He has a B.S. from Golden Gate University (whatever that is) and an M.B. from a New Mexico state college. How humiliating that this yo-yo lives in my state. Assuming that there is actually anyone by the name of J.D. Martinez, which is highly doubtful. The bio says that he was an air force officer, but the fact that it doesn’t specify his rank or his duties in the AF suggests that this is a lie, or that he was an E-4 at best, not there’s anything at all wrong with being an E-4, but my guess is this pathetic human creature wouldn’t even be qualified to be an E-4. The bio says he was born and catechised Catholic, but the accuracy level in the article suggests he knows almost nothing about Catholicism, which means he is pretty ignorant about Christianity, period.

Wow, you’re in NM too? Small world- I’m in Clovis. Anyways, yeah, the guy didn’t do much research for someone with such high learnin’. Or at least not any that would disprove his opinion. But what really gets me is that almost anyone can justify any belief by quoting a single verse here and there, and they know it and use it. One thing about the evangelical group I’m from; they have lots of small groups. Bible studies, etc. We need more of that. We need to get people active in the Church. It almost seems many Catholics don’t know that it’s ok to be active in Bible study and other activities within the Church. Many seem all too happy to just go to Mass and go through the motions, and end up spiritually dead. That’s when Protestants can come in with bells and whistles and stir up some excitement that they have been missing, and lead them away. I must admit I love the Mass, but if I didn’t do my own personal Bible study and other activities (alot of them at my old church because the Catholic churches here offer nothing) it would quickly get old. The church needs to take steps to connect with people outside of Mass and help them keep Christ in their daily lives, and not just have Him around once per week. I’m sure there are churches like that, but not in my town. Blah!

I pay close attention to those who pretend to spout “the truth”. What I have mostly found is that many, if not most, Christians are so profoundly ignorant of THEIR OWN religion, not to mention mine, that they are truly not worth the effort to speak to them on the subject AT ALL.

If I thought there would be a positive outcome, of course I would make an effort. But when someone begins with the “RULE” that Catholics are not even Christian, that Catholicism is a “cult” to be thrown into the same pot as Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses, which is a tenet of faith among many evangelicals, you totally lose me. Sorry. Those people seem to be so brain washed, I can’t help them.

To have an Evangelical Christian tell you that a Catholic is not Christian is not only insulting, it’s just plain ignorant. They don’t even know where their own religion came from & now they want to preach to me about the supposed flaws in mine? Gimme a break!

Hi
I would like both the Protestants and Catholics to get United and merged into OneChristendom, that would be a nice thing to do.
Thanks
The West, as I understand, due to certain disinformation has seen only MullahIslam or MullahShariah; the true face of Muhammad’sIslam and PromisedMessiahImamMahdi’sIslam is yet hidden from their eyes, which is truly speaking only peaceful.
GodAllahYHWH is All-Knowing and All-Wise; one should invariably give Claim and Reason on all important issues from one’s Revealed Book; one shouldn’t try putting one’s own words into God’s mouth.

Howdy, jfallaw. I’m in Albuquerque. I drive thru Clovis several times a year, usually enroute either to Texas or Oklahoma City.

I agree about Bible study. I’m not so sure many Catholics don’t read a lot of Bible at home. I’m also not so sure that so many evangelicals read as much at home as they claim to. The main problem I see with it, and probably one of the big reasons Catholics tend to avoid Bible studies, is that they often get to be out-of-whack doctrinally. When I was a fundamentalist, Bible study night was the big night of the week. We’d take turns leading, but there was always one particular guy in the study who fancied himself the doctrine expert, and never was shy about pronouncing his interpretations as infallible. I suppose that if the study could be led by a trustworthy individual who sticks to an approved study guide, then it’d be a lot better.

It looks like someone got a hold of a chick tract. On the website where it says how to accept Jesus is copied word for word from the last page of every chick tract. I can’t believe anyone who is a Christian can buy into the stuff the chick publications throws out there.

I thought Martinez made a lot of sense. Did you read all he said?
