Hello,

I have struggled w/ this for a few months now. It seems I cant leave 2 hours without eating food 😦 And hearing that Benedictine monks eating 2 meals a day maximum woke me up.

Might not be ā€œgluttonyā€ at all. Might want to have a doctor check out your metabolism.

I’ll frankly admit that I’m guilty of gluttony at times. Now and then if my wife makes something extraordinarily good, I’ll eat it until I’m uncomfortable, and just because of the taste, not because of hunger. Now that’s gluttony, though perhaps a fairly minor form of it. Last night one of my granddaughters brought over a peach cobbler. I did (barely) restrain myself from eating the whole thing, but I ate more than I should have.

But if a person actually is hungry every two hours, that’s not gluttony. It might be some kind of physical thing, and ought to be looked into.

I know people who are pre-diabetic who have to eat something frequently or they start feeling bad. That’s a medical condition, not gluttony, and sometimes people don’t even realize that’s what’s going on with them.

I am in recovery from binge eating disorder. The sin of gluttony is definitely involved, but I think competent psychological help is really key in addition to tackling the spiritual dimension. I suffered alone for about 15 years - I reached out to one counselor whose only comment was, ā€œIt could be worse, it could be alcohol or heroin,ā€ then confided in a counselor I saw many years later for postpartum depression, who was actually helpful. I’ve been in recovery now for almost three years. šŸ‘ If you ever want to talk just PM me.

Though, if it really is only an issue with frequency, keep Ridgerunner’s advice in mind. See a doctor about possible medical conditions. Not everyone is called to live as Benedictine monks do.

I just ate two corn dogs less than two hours after eating at Chick Fil A. Not a good weight watchers day for me.

Gluttony sucks.

I struggle with gluttony as well. I’ve tried different things, but now I pray the Rosary of the 7 Sorrows, which is said to help with freeing ourselves from addictions. That seems to be one of the few things which has helped me.

Also, I read about Our Lady of Kibeho, and she requested we fast and pray.

It seems easier when I think of sacrifices as giving them to the Lord for, say, the conversion of sinners.

When I get those feelings, I munch on Carrots, takes a while to chew them up for little volume
You can also boil them up just a little, adding honey to the hot water for sweet flavor ,
Also a tin with walnuts ,good health food, and it’s cheap

I agree with Ridgerunner, there could be a medical reason for this. If there’s something going on with your blood sugar, you may very well feel compelled to eat every couple hours. Only your physician, and perhaps a lab workup, will be able to tell you.

I’ve struggled with it on and off for the past five years. I think I’m finally over it though! 😃 My secret? THE ROSARY! ā¤ļøā¤ļø

You’re not a Benedictine Monk. It sounds like you may just metabolize faster. I often eat several meals a day.

It might be related to your metabolism.

In my case, I get hungry every 3 hours and I get stomach aches that I can’t walk straight and rarely can’t breathe well if I go more than 4-5 hours without eating.

That’s a great idea. Many of the American processed foods contain flavor enhancers which are artificial and somewhat addictive creating cravings to enjoy the artificially enhanced taste. It is better to eat carrots, celery, green peppers, radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers, kale, spinach, etc., instead of tortilla chips, potato chips, cakes, strudels, chocolate icings, chocolate chip cookies, fudgy brownies topped with Hagen Dagz ice cream, etc. Some churches teach that their members have a serious moral responsibility to take care of their health.

There is evidence,( you can do some research,) that the GMO wheat in everything we eat causes a rapid blood sugar rise and fall that contributes to cravings and overeating. I switched to the forms of ancient wheat at the beginning of this year and six months later have beat all the night time munching and overeating. It may help you to investigate this angle. Supposedly the GMO (genetically modified) wheats that are in everything) cause a sharper and higher spike than table sugar. And think how many foods are based in flour; cheap, non nutritive flour. There are many more health benefits to eliminating it, also: reflux, weight loss, blood pressure, colon health, I could go on and on. I’ll get off the soapbox now and let you do your own research should this idea intrigue you!šŸ™‚

It seems I cant leave 2 hours without eating food .
That seems to be the vice of Praepropere according to St. Thomas who defined
five ways to commit gluttony:
Laute – eating food that is too luxurious, exotic, or costly
Nimis – eating food that is excessive in quantity
Studiose – eating food that is too daintily or elaborately prepared
Praepropere – eating too soon, or at an inappropriate time
Ardenter – eating too eagerly.

According to St. Thomas: Gluttony can be a venial or mortal sin. If the inordinate concupiscence in gluttony turns man away from the last end, then gluttony will be a mortal sin. On the other hand, if a man has too great a desire for the pleasures of food, yet would not for their sake do anything contrary to God’s law, it is a venial sin.

However, St. Thomas lived in a time when there were more natural foods, and no (or little) GM foods, which many nutritionists say contribute to creating an addiction to food and overeating. Russia has banned both the cultivation and importation of GM crops, which some observers claim has led to the imposition of economic sanctions against them. These observers note that the US leads the way in promoting GM foods which has brought with it the obesity epidemic and other health problems affecting millions of unsuspecting men, women and children. And of course, there are the American additives and food enhancers which are designed to please the palate and thereby create an inordinate craving for the taste of certain foods.

I walk 5-7 miles a day workout and such. I should watch what I eat… but I eat roughly every 2 hours. Times are not gluttony. When I eat junk… eh such starts to lean toward gluttony

Grapes and apples every 2 hours you are no glutton.

Doughnuts and such… maybe

Baby carrots are my #1 snack food. They have a nice satisfying crunch that I find I like even better than chips or pretzels.

I get a bag of them from the store and put them in a Tupperware container. When I want to snack, I just pull out the container, eat from it until I’m satisfied, then put it back.

I had originally portioned the carrots into a bowl, but then I found I’d end up eating all of them, whether I actually wanted to eat them all or not. Once I started just allowing myself to eat from the container, I found myself eating less, yet still feeling satiated.

I admit I did struggle with gluttony before but as someone mentioned before, the rosary has proved immensely powerful in the struggle against this sin.

I do not forbid myself any food but I limit myself to three meals a day and limit sweets and junk food to the weekends. Most of the time I eat whole unprocessed healthy foods and practice portion control on all foods I eat.

In the struggle against weight it is important to remember that diet counts for 80% and exercise counts for 20%. Exercise should not be used as an excuse for unlimited eating. I used to do that and I gained weight in spite of frequent exercise.

Yes!!!

I’m a stress eater. I’ve had a ton of stress these past six years or so. Now I’m obese, can’t excercise cause of painful health problems and just want to eat eat eat. I’m having to watch quantity and frequency. I have lost four lbs in 2 months. Pretty good for being post-menopausal woman who’s stuck at home all day and can’t excercise. :o (Patting myself on the back. :p) One day when I guess…

It’s nice to know I’m not alone. Prayers for all!

Obviously St Tom has not been on a cruise.
