I am an occasional watcher when it airs on TV, and I would say the first season is fine, but later seasons it is not portrayed as well. There was of course the standard homosexual episode (recently) in which they completely set up a strawman in order to knock it down (he somehow thought his faith required him to fire a detective who was gay).

This is a great point. Showing all of the levels is really nice, especially the newbie beat cop level. Also, the Blue Templar recurring storyline nicely ties together all of the largely independent episodes.
It is not really a spoiler, but it was Frank, the police commissioner thought his faith required him to fire a newly introduced detective. The show overall is pretty good and only has the occasional eye rolling episode like the one mentioned.

Our faith requires no such thing, and a reflective and generally well informed person as Frank is presented to be should have known better.
But it is still plausible. Such people seem to not discuss their root values much and simply act on them without discussion.
I think I have met about 20 Christians in my life that believed that Christian teachings encourage people to exploit moral degeneracy in order to discourage it among those who see it. Sort of like the herd eating its own weakest members in order to encourage the rest to not get sick.
But none of them were well read or given to introspection.
These seems to reveal a surprising tin ear among the writers of the show. I thought they had better Catholic advisers than that.
LOL, yes that is probably true. I know I didn’t pay much attention to that episode, because I was arguing with my husband about what the writers were trying to do. (He wasn’t watching, so it was an uphill battle on my part.
)This is also my experience. It began airing over here earlier this year or perhaps end of last year, and I raved about the first season. I still love it but cringe at some of the loose portrayals of Catholicism. Yeah, since watching the series I have had this urge to visit New Yahk for the first time in my life.
