Anyone's kids read Brian Jacques' books?

Greetings, All!
My son, nearly thirteen, is a voracious reader who’s devoured the books of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and is now into the fantasy novels of Brian Jacques, who is a prolific writer. Anyone familiar with his works out there? Is there anything anti-Catholic or anti-Christian in them?

Not at all!!! They’re all about little animals, like mice, moles, squirrels, hedgehogs, rabbits, hares, and badgers, and their enemies, the weasels, ferrets, foxes, stoats, and wild cats. In each book, a villain with an army at his/her back threatens the peaceful existence of the nice creatures, who are all very kind and helpful to one another. They have to work together to defend their homes and families from the nasty guys. Each book is full of poems, riddles, and songs, too. The only complaint I have is they are quite formulaic, but for a younger reader they are quite enjoyable, and very wholesome. Nothing about God is ever mentioned in the books that I can remember, but nothing against Him ever comes up, either.

I hope your son enjoys them as much as I did when I was his age! 👍
 
I read those books! I loved the first couple, but eventually got tired of them (they are VERY formulaic). My younger sister loved them and I think she read them all.

I don’t remember there being anything at all anti-Christian or anti-Catholic in them. I’m not even sure religion is ever referred to. I hope your son’s enjoying them!
 
They were a good read but the later books really are just reincarnations of the earlier ones. A child might not necessarily pick up on that though.

Brian Jacques has a website and there is even a PBS cartoon show that he narrates.

Go ahead and let him read these books - there are for sure enough to keep him going for a long time ;).

The Redwall series is recommended on “A Mother’s List of Books”, which is sold through Adoremus Books. It is a list compiled by a Catholic homeschooling mother of wholesome books for your kids to read. I’d recommend buying the list OR A Landscape with Dragons, The Battle for Your Child’s Mind by Michael D. O’Brien for more suggestions. (There is a long list of books in the back.) You’ve got a lot of years ahead of you with the books there! You may as well be ahead of him with a new book to read rather than play clean up after he’s read something questionable!

I have yet to find a source that tells you what not to let the kids read. You have to read them first (something I don’t have time to do!)
 
My oldest son loved those books when he was younger. There is nothing antiCatholic in them at all.🙂
 
I have to add - you may know this already - go to the Brian Jacques website (don’t remember the exact address right now just google him). The order in which they were written is not the order in which they should be read. We stumbled upon that information and our library did not know it. They had them numbered chronologically. You’re not supposed to start with “Redwall” - that’s somewhere in the middle.
 
grandkids, and SIL love these books, and I think the picture of monastic life in the fictional middle ages lived by the little animals is both historically and religiously accurate, as is the notion of chivalry, bravery and eternal vigilance against evil.
 
i just wanted to say i have read all these books and they are very good not Tolekien but still good and i also wanted to suggest the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan fantastic series but i dont know how old ur kids are so unless he is at least 14(thats how old i was when i started them im now 18) they may be a little deep and confusing
 
Well alot of the animals live in a monestary of sorts… some of the mice are called Br. _______, and whatnot. Mostly the books teach about the virtues of courage, love, friendship, good over evil, etc. Fun books I used to devour these books, I can see them up on the highest shelf in my room from where im sitting.

We have them all and love them all and all the kids who can read do red them happily!
You can get the cartoon version from Netflix. My kids enjoyed them and they really are fairly decent renderings.
