Hey all, I hope someone here can enlighten me a bit, but does anyone see anything wrong or theologically wrong with the picture below? I know my mom doesn’t like it since I think she had something like it depicts the Holy Spirit being a human person or something like that. I’m kind of leery of this picture myself and am wondering if I should continue to keep it hanging in my home.
Thanks for any (name removed by moderator)ut.

No, there is nothing theologically wrong with the picture. It just represents the Holy Trinity, as Three Divine Persons.

Don’t know if its “wrong,” but to me its definately weird. 🙂

the only thing i noticed that is wrong with this picture is the masonic all seeing eye…there is no catholic symbol like that, but it is a very popular and widely used masonic symbol, that would be enough to make me get rid of it.

I concur in that there isn’t anything wrong theologically, in my opinion.

The first strange thing with the image is that someone has taken the artistic license of using the common bearded image of Christ, but replicate the youthful appearance of Him as the Father.

The second thing is more obvious. In classical artwork, the Father is normally shown as a much "older’ image of the Son, with a white beard and the like. But almost invariably, the Holy Spirit is shown as a bird (commonly, a dove), never as a human image as shown here.

The symbols on the robes of each Person make me smile. It reminds me of the superhero emblems, which is definitely an understatement of Their power. 🙂

The Three Divine Person are stepping their feet on the angels’ head. Is that okay?

Very bad; this is not orthodox Christian Art - dump it!

This looks like 3 Greek/Roman Gods in human form. In fact they look like aliens - weird is not the word.

The Trinity is never depicted as 3 humans - only Jesus became incarnate.
God the Father is beyond our comprehension (Pillar of Fire/ Burning Bush) and the Holy Spirit is usuall depicted as a dove as mentioned in Scripture.
Looks like something from India where they have such depictions. Perhaps it is a LDS painting? It is not Christian and very unsettling - I certainly couldn’t pray with that on my wall.

Ahh, yeah. I didn’t notive that all-seeing eye thing, so I recommend you not put it on your wall :), or anywhere else for that matter.

PS:
Human proportions all wrong. Looks like these were originally 3 standing figures which have been altered. Check where girdles are.

Cover the lower half with a card and you will see what I mean.

Not only is it non-Chritisn Art, it is very very ‘bad’ art. Would get F in final grades!!!
As I said …dump it. There are lots & lots of beautuful repro pix on the Net.

Wow! I had no idea that the “all-seeing eye” was a masonic symbol!

I guess I’ll be taking it down (again). 😉 I wonder what’s the best way to get rid of it though since I wouldn’t want anyone to get a hold of something like this.

Note the eye as depicted is also a Christians symbol used in Christian art. Just cause masons like it too does not mean it is not Christian! And given the context it is a Christian symbol here too. In fact I have a very old rosary that has it on it! 🙂

Actually, one of the most famous icons of all time, Rublev’s Trinity, painted around 1400, depicts the Trinity as 3 human forms. And there are other completely orthodox artworks that do the same. And, a couple minutes on the Internet would tell you that the “all-seeing Eye” was a Christian symbol before the Masons got a hold of it (and a pagan one before the Christians used it!).

That said, I agree that there’s something about the painting that is weird, and it does have a kind of “Indian Christian” look to it. I don’t believe it’s “wrong,” but I sure don’t find it inspiring or devotional in any way.

The thing about it that makes me feel weird is that Father/Son/Holy Spirit are stepping on the heads of the angels/babies. And I agree about the point about proportions

Artistically speaking, it is very uninspiring.

I vote for Rublev’s “Trinity”.

I do find it weird that the 3 persons of the Trinity are resting their feet on the head of 3 cheribum/seraphim (?). I don’t know if there is any specific reason for that. However, it is sort of a unique picture. I like looking at it. It’s just a little thought-provoking.

Maybe you should read this thread about the (“All Seeing Eye”) forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=222748

Catholic Christians, Egyptians, and Masons all share a similar version of the “all seeing eye”. with different interpretations of course.
