Ben087 wonders **: " I was just wondering if any of you had ever been in a place, spiritually, [when committing a particular] sin seemed to bother you less and less. For me, I guess this would be sin such as lust. Does this indicate bad things spiritually?" **
If
- a person attempts to gain control over the urge to commit a particular Sin for a LONG period of time, but
- is completely unable to control himself to NOT commit that Sin, then
- it would be Spiritually stupid to allow yourself to lose all of your Faith, just beating yourself up over it.
The MAIN thing in Life is to keep yourself open to improvement.
When I start a new Job, I (at first) beat myself up over silly mistakes I make, while learning it.
After a few days, I begin to NOT beat-myself-UP, and try to clear my mind of Guilt about it, SO that I can be open to learning about other things, which are equally important.
I think that this same idea is appropriate in Spiritual issues.
A person CANNOT become a Perfect Saint in ONE DAY.
The Best a person can do, is to find one aspect of behavior to work on, and then work on it, to see if he can change it to a Good thing.
Then, if he has effected that Change, he can move on the NEXT emotional defect, and work on that one.
That is the BEST a person can do.
Now, let’s look at the less-than-Best.
I come up against a Sin (or a Near Occasion of Sin) that I wish to FIX.
I work at it … but it doesn’t seem to get better.
At this point, it is counter-productive to beat myself up over it.
After all, some day in the future, I may be able to fix it.
So, I then move on to try to fix a different Sin … to gain control over committing it.
Strive for Progress … NOT for Perfection.
Anyone who thinks that a person must constantly pound himself over not being PERFECT (in every aspect of his Life), is not a Spiritual person.
Nobody is Perfect.
Anyone who thinks that he is almost Perfect … is perhaps the MOST Imperfect of us all.
