This is probally a bit of a throw away thread, but I’m sincerly interested in the topic. Do people like the title “the Revelation”(most modern bibles, Catholic or protestant)(? or “The Apocalypse”(Douai-Rheims)?

This is really just a cosmetic thing and doesn’t really matter, but what do you guys prefer and why? and which best describes the final book?

Personally I like the title Apocalypse, because of it’s connotations and how it really seems to be a nice poetic title for the book, especially with how it plays with “Genesis”. Genesis is beginning, Apocalypse is endings… I like that, it’s beautiful, it’s quite fitting. I prefer it.

Actually, “apocalypse” is Greek for “revelation.” The word really has nothing to do with the end of the world in and of itself. We only associate it with the end because it is the title of a book that deals partially with the end.

Yeah I already knew that, which is why I’m asking… is it more fitting than it’s translation because of those “end of the world” connotations (which came from it being the title of this book)?

I like “apocalypse” better, myself. But then I am partial to Greek.

I think “Apocalypse” is more evocative and just plain cool. But most people you talk to these days that have even a passing knowledge of Scripture (or even those who have been exposed to the dopey “Late Great Planet Earth” and “Left Behind” garbage) are used to hearing it referred to as the Book of Revelation. If you refer to it as “The Apocalypse,” you usually get a blank look and have some 'splaining to do.

(FYI - The Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition gives both titles for the book, with “The Apocalypse” in parentheses. The Catholic NAB calls it “Revelation” but in the first sentence of the introduction points out it is also called “The Apocalypse.”)
