I’m doing a co-op for homeschool kids. The topic I chose to do is apologetics because I feel I am well versed in this area. But that hasn’t made it easy for me to decide what to do. Is there any course outlines out there that I can follow/ modify to fit the class? (I’m teaching high school) thanks!

Hi,
I have had some experience with High School age. Apologetics is not effective if kids first can’t tell you why they are Catholic. I would start with that question first and see what you get. Because defending your faith takes real zeal and if they don’t now why they are Catholic dont expect them to take seriously learning to defend it. So I would first design your content to help them answer that question in very simple form with maybe the top 5. Something simple like the below. But they need to own their own answers.
  1. I believe the Catholic Church is the true Church founded by Jesus Christ and to know him is to know his Church. Its teachings are Scriptural, historical and reasonable.
  2. I believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and this great gift is brought only to us by a valid Priest Hood
Next fill in with only the top 5 -10 top questions catholics are asked most. And train them the top 5 questions Catholic should ask others… We seem to forget that apologetics is not about having a good answer its also about having a better question to change the dynamics.

Finally leave them with hands on resources with something they can relate two. There are some awesome Apologetics Apps now for the Iphone and Droid you can download and have all the expertise you need truly at you fingers tips. If they have resource handy they wont be afraid to engage others otherwise they wont do.

Hope this help.
