Hi all!
I have been given the BEAUTIFUL and WONDERFUL opportunity to help start up a Catholic apologetics book club with a few of my close peers at our very big, VERY secular university (I think it was voted Playboy’s #1 party school in 2006 or something ridiculous {but altogether not very surprising} like that). None of us are professional apologists or theologians…at all. But ALL of us are very much in love with our Roman Catholic faith and want to learn more about it and grow more in it to become the men and women (and hopefully saints) we are called to be, and to be the Lights of Christ on this battlefield we call “campus”! 😉

Do any of you have any suggestions on books we could read, theologians/apologists to really focus on, methods to go about our club get-togethers, discussions we most certainly should have, arguments we most definitely should have memorized, websites we should ALWAYS and in every moment refer to, etc. etc. etc.? We would love all the help and advice we can get! 🙂

Thank you and God bless you all!
Angela

I like apologetics books that are fair, academic, and civil.

I like Mary: A Catholic Evangelical Debate, written by Longnecker and Gustafson. You will get both sides of the issue, both sides of the debate, and this is a good thing.

I also recommend:

Michael Davies: “Cranmer’s Godly Order”

Hilaire Belloc “How the Reformation Happened”

Cardinal Newman’s Apologia Pro Vita Sua

GK Chesterton’s Heretics… Also Orthodoxy

New Stuff:

The Surprised by Truth series. Especially the first volume.

Rome Sweet Home (by Scott Hahn)

In fact, anything by Hahn is darn good for starters… except his new book in the Anchor Bible Commentary series which is AWESOME (but not for a book club…)

Amen to all the above. Also recommend Peter Kreeft’s book Catholicism and Fundamentalism.🙂

Angela, you may also want to share with the group my website, that has oodles of free, downloadable .mp3’s of great Catholic talks on a variety of subjects. I think most college students have .mp3 players, ipods, etc., or access to a PC where they can play .mp3’s with programs such as Real Player, etc. The link is as follows:

Correction: This book was written by Karl Keating.

I also recommend Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic by Dave Currie

The Catholicism for Dummies is also an excellent resource - once you get past the title. I rolled my eyes when I first saw it. My wife purchased it and I was delightfully surprised at how well it was written.
