I am looking to find a book(s) that will help me strengthen my background in the Catholic apologetics. I looked at several books during a recent visit to a Catholic bookstore. Nothing they had seemed appropriate. Either the books I saw were too simplistic or were written like at such an advanced level they were painful to read (given I only read a few pages).

Are there any “intermediate level” apologetics books out there that any of you would recommend. I am not looking for a book on the basics of the Catholic faith. My grade/high school education in Catholic schools did a fine enough job at that.

I am looking for a book that explain why the Catholic Church does what it does and provides a good response for the criticisms that Protestants and others put forward against the teachings of the RCC.

It’s been my experience that there’s not really any intermediate apologetics books. I followed the course of reading beginner books such as “Where is That in the Bible?” by Patrick Madrid and then moved on to more in depth books by subject such as “Not by Faith Alone” by Sungenis and “Upon This Rock” by Ray.

Here’s a thread that might be helpful:

Catholic Apologist’s Bookshelf

I’d recommend any book on the list. 🙂

Peter Kreeft and Ronald Tacelli’s Handbook of Christian Apologetics is also very good, but it’s geared towards a general Christian audience rather than a specifically Catholic audience. So it’s great for debates with non-Christians, but not as helpful in debates with other Christians. 😉

Some of the best books are of course “Catholicism and Fudamentalism” by Karl Keating, but I would say before that, get “Any Friend of God is a friend of Mine” by Patrick Madrid. I like that one first because the blessed mother and the saints are a hot spot with our seperated brotheren. Next, “Unabridged Christianity” by Father Mario P. Romero. These last two books are very easy to read and tackle the issues very well, then you are ready for “Catholicism and Fudamentalism”. And to add one more book, “Theology for Beginners” by Frank Sheed. A great book that is easy to read but goes deeper on the Mass, Eucharist, Trinity Ect.

I will give that an AMEN. One more that should be required reading for everyone Theology and Sanity by Frank Sheed. It’s an apologetic in its own right.

Peace,
