What newer apologetics books do you like?

Someone I’m giving a gift to has read a good bit of a Scott Hahn, Peter Kreeft, Tim Staples etc, so I’m looking for something new.

This might not answer your question… but my favorite apologetic books are those that are “anti-apologetic”–those that disagree with Christianity/Catholicism and attempt to argue against (hopefully in a calm and clear manner). Then, you are seeing what the enemy believes through his own eyes and you can come up with responses yourself. You become conditioned to reading stuff that makes you uncomfortable; you become comfortable reading it, and non-Christians respect you for loving them enough to meet them on their own turf.

One such book is “The Christian Delusion.”

Not an apologetics book, but a good reference work is

“Faith of the Early Fathers” translated and edited by Jurgens. Three volume set, volumes are chronological. It is translations of Christian writers and I’ve found the first volume very interesting in that it highlights the consistency of the doctrine of the Church over time.

An apologetics work I recommend is Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Keating.

The best apologetic book out there for theism IMO is “The Last Superstition” by Edward Feser. It’s a tad polemical so if your friend has soft feelings I wouldn’t give it. Then again most reviews of the book from atheists seem to complain about their hurt feelings instead of addressing the arguments…

The best apologetic book for Catholicism is “Apologetics and Catholic Doctrine” by Archbishop Michael Sheehan. There’s a section that supports intelligent design that I didn’t care for, but otherwise the book is the best in this category. Unfortunately it just went out of print, Barionius Press needs to do another printing. If you can find a copy in a good catholic bookstore like I did, I highly recommend it.
