I’m sure you are getting lots of wonderful advise. I’ll add a couple of my own. (Sorry if I repeat)Hello there! Someday I’d like to be a great apologist like all of you! Could you guys help me get started? Well, I kinda already got started, I got the Douay-Rheims Bible with Haydock Commentary. I heard it is a great study Bible, I started reading the Bible and commentary as I went along but after the commentary on the first verse of Genesis…I was lost. So if anyone can suggest Ideas for becoming a great apologist, that would be great.
- Be careful about wanting to be a “Great” apologist. This can lead to “Pride” and cause one to place “Winning and Argument” ahead of True Christian Discussion.
- Pray for Guidance from the Holy Spirit.
- Listen to Other Apologists. I say listen because hearing discussions and talks gives a more full understanding of the subject matter than just reading. (this is one of the problems with the “Bible only” Protestants. They don’t understand that Catholic “Oral Tradition” is one of the things that gives “life” to understanding Scripture.)
- Learn the importance in apologetics of saying “I don’t Know”, then follow that up immediately with, “But I’ll find out and get back to you”.
THEN DO IT. - Listen for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It can often come at odd times. Keep a pad with you to scribble these down so that you can examine them later. (To assure that these are “good” inspiration.)
- Don’t be afraid to get into discussions NOW, even though you are not well studied. You’ll find that your best learning will come from seeking the answers to specific questions posed to you.
- Study the Catachism as well as the Bible so that you are sure that you are teaching actual Catholic Teachings.
- Bring the stumpers here for help. (That’s what I do)
- Read and respond to as many threads here as you can. Ask questions and continue to Pray.
Peace
James
