Hereâs my letter: Comments welcome.
You Excellency, Archbsihop Flynn,
Last night I attended one of the Commission on Women meetings that was held at St. Timothyâs in Blaine. The moderator did a good job of facilitating the meeting and not showing bias.
I will tell you however with regard to the content of the discussion I am very concerned about the outcome of these meetings. The primary focus of the meetings was âempowerment of womenâ and ordination of women to the diaconite, priesthood, and even as Bishops and Popes, and many other issues contrary to Church teaching. As I recall our late great Pope John Paul II said these were matters that were not open to discussion, it is a part of Sacred Oral Tradition that women cannot be priests. It is not open for discussion. Yet that was the main focus of the meeting. I never once heard the question âhow can women better serve the Churchâ?
It is my view that these meetings going forward are unproductive and will only serve to provide a forum for views that may well eventually divide our Church as the Anglican Church divided over the issue of womenâs ordination in the 1990âs. This commission is providing a grassroots channel for views that are contrary to the Magesterium of the Church. The turnout was low and in my view not a good cross section of women in this Archdiocese so it is my view that the information back to you will be very skewed in an overly negative way toward the Magesterium. I do not find this to be beneficial or healty for the Body of Christ in this Archdiocese and will pray for your wisdom in discerning the proper course of action.
Peace in Christ,
Gerald L. Hunt
