I just got back into town tonight and saw what my honest, and what I thought harmless question, turned into. I am most apologetic for causing any problems…I was just seeking a better understanding of how and why my in-laws feel the way they do. I don’t want to further upset anyone, so I will not question this subject again. I am so very sorry for causing any trouble…I may not know y’all but the last thing I want to do is make people mad…times are tough enough as it is. God Bless

I can’t speak for the moderators who closed your thread, but it looks to me like they closed it for reasons other than your posts. By all means, ask your questions again if you want to talk about this subject, unless a moderator has told you not to. Don’t worry too much about people getting mad, Some people can find a reason to get mad about anything.

You do not have anything to apologize for!

This is the nature of an internet forum. Sometimes things go off topic or one particular aspect of the topic gets picked up and then there is debate about something, and then another point is brought up, etc.

That’s just how it is. And, please don’t take anything personally that is said on here.

I hope you did get an understanding by reading the thread that your in-laws are legitimately concerned about their son, but are crossing boundaries and butting in where they do not belong with the intrusive questions and bringing up topics that are none of their business.

There were some good questions asked on that thread, such as whether or not they voiced any concern over the 5 year dating period or just sprung all this after the wedding, how devout they were in their homelife when your DH was growing up, etc. It seems kind of weird that they would just all of a sudden have these concerns.

And, also, this isn’t exclusively a “Catholic” parent thing-- it’s a parent thing in general. All parents worry about their children, grown or not and married or not. But, not all parents overstep their boundaries. And, these are.

Thank you. I don’t take anything mentioned in the thread personal because I did ask for opinions, and everyone made very valid points for which I am grateful to hear. I frequently visit other public forums online and sometimes find it annoying when a newbie comes along and “disturbs the peace”, so I just want to make it clear that this was not my intention. I regret being unable to check back with the topic while I was out of town, as there were many questions and comments that I would have addressed in order to give a better understanding of the situation. The following is very long but maybe it will help clear something up……As I mentioned in my original post, my husband I were together for 5 years prior to getting married. We were from the same hometown, but met in college, I was a freshman and he was a junior, we had been assigned to the same post for a fundraiser sponsored by his fraternity and my sorority. I hate to sound corny, but it was love at first sight. It was probably a few weeks into our relationship before religion was even mentioned, after all it is not uncommon for students to go off to college and stop attending church regularly like they would if they were still at home and encouraged to do so by their parents. When we did discuss religion it was still not a very big deal… he told me that he was raised Catholic, but had not attended mass in over 3 years (other than Christmas with his parents). I told him that I was raised Episcopalian and that since going off to college; I too only attended when I went home for holidays. That was pretty much the extent of our discussion on religion and we very rarely brought the subject up because, and I don’t want this to come out the wrong way, it was not a big deal in our lives at that point. One thing that was brought up in the thread was if his parents showed any dismay about me not being Catholic, prior our marriage. I described them as being devout, because in my non-Catholic opinion they seem to be……they attend mass several times a week, abstain from meat during lent, and are very active in their church. I’m sure that they always wanted him to marry a Catholic (all of his brothers did) and hoped that he would return to their church, but they never made us feel guilty for things not working out that way. I think that they wanted their son be happy, rather than risk pushing him away by discouraging a relationship with someone of a different faith. As far as my family goes…they are very much involved in the church and always encouraged me and my siblings to be as well. They are also extremely accepting of other opinions and faiths, in fact my sister has been dating a Jewish man for 2 years now and my parents could not be happier for her. After I graduated we both moved back to our hometown where we were offered jobs (once again not living together), and I started attending church again with my family. He did not choose to attend mass with his family, I did not question it….that was his choice. Not too long after moving home, he started going with me to miscellaneous events through my church……cocktail parties, silent auctions ect. He began to make good friends with a lot of the members our age, and eventually asked to attend Sunday services with us. When we got engaged, he had been attending our church for about 2 months and really enjoyed participating in all of the young member’s groups. I made it clear to him that if he wanted to marry in our church, then I of course would be happy, but that if he would rather have a non-denominational service, that would be fine too (he already said that he had no desire to be married in the Catholic church). Like I said originally, his parents were disappointed, but they made no attempt to spoil things for us, held their tongues, and hosted a lovely after rehearsal dinner for us. The problems with my in-laws did not start until I started graduate school at a nearby university. My parents were thrilled, his however were asking “but when will you have children?” At first DH and I laughed it off, although I knew that they were expecting children right away, because apparently that’s what they do in their family. All of their other daughter’s in-law started families right after marriage, as did his parents, but having children was not and still is not at the top of our “to do list”. Do we want children, yes, would we be happy if we got pregnant now, yes, but we are also very happy with it being just us and the dog! When the time is right it will happen……Time goes on and the nagging worsens…we never told my in-laws that we were attempting to prevent pregnancy but MIL informed me that she just knew we were, because it usually takes a healthy couple only one year to conceive. She made this assumption based on the fact that I have yet to become pregnant and have made statements regarding the wish to finish my masters. I never confirmed nor denied her assumptions because I felt it was crossing the line. She informed me that because of my “selfishness” I am denying the very purpose of marriage and therefore, along with my husband, committing a sin. Up until this point they had never used their faith as a way to inflict guilt upon us, therefore I can’t help but wonder why now? I can’t help but think that their actions are motivated not necessarily out of concern for us, but rather than the desire to have grandchildren, and do things the way they think it should be done. Even though my husband has constantly told them that he is happy with our life the way it is, they still put all of the blame on me. To be continued due to character restrictions…

They say that they just want us to complete our family….the thing is I don’t consider us to be incomplete, we have each other, a dog that we love as if he were a human child, a lovely home, my husband has a wonderful career, a church that we both enjoy attending, and I am near to finishing something that I have worked hard very hard for over the past few years. There is nothing that I ever been taught which would suggest that having children right away is a necessity of marriage. My parents always encouraged us to do what makes us happy….to set goals and achieve them. I come from a large family so obviously my parents would love for us to have children, but only if it is what we want. My mother always said that for her and my father, putting children off until they were older was a wonderful decision because they were able to really get know each other and focus on building a strong relationship which enabled them to become better parents She said if that we (me and my siblings) wanted to have children right after marriage go for it, but don’t let any person or society convince you that should just because it is expected. I want to make it clear that I love my in-laws, and I wish that this was not an issue but I feel like they are pushing us away from them with their faith. We are not Catholic yet they are using their Catholic beliefs against us, and it is this that makes me so upset. I not would tell a Jewish person that they are sinners because of their faith and how it differs from my own……that is none of my business. If they were nagging us to have babies simply to have them, then I would understand…after all its natural to want grandchildren that you can spoil, but how dare they tell me that I am a selfish sinner. I’m sorry but this is why I came to a Catholic forum, because this is beyond an in-law issue….it is them imposing their religion on us and I was curious as to what other Catholics would have to say regarding this problem. It is my belief that “each to his own”. I will not make judgments against people based on how they live their life (obvious criminals do not apply). I would think that they should be proud enough that they succeeded in raising a wonderful man who lives a good life and is most importantly, a loving and devoted husband. I am sorry that this was so long, but I hope this provides a better understanding of my feelings and the reason I sought answers on this forum. Thank you. Lizz

As I said in your other thread your in-laws are out of line. Your MIL has really over stepped. I think your husband is the one that needs to speak with them both and make it crystal clear that they have over stepped and this discussion is off the table.

If you want some understanding of the Catholic perspective on children marriage I can give some insight. I think you already know the teaching on artificial means of birth control. Catholics can rely on natural family planning if there is serious reason to avoid pregnancy. Withdrawal is not acceptable and not considered natural family planning even though withdrawal is hardly reliable. A marriage is not considered valid if the couple goes into it not being open to life and intends to remain closed to children. And while I’m sure you love your dog dearly (and there are many pet lovers on this forum) it is not acceptable to consider animals and human children equal.

While I’m sure your in-laws are distressed, they have raised their children and now their adult son and his wife are to make their own decision about marriage, family and religion. It should be your husband that sets the boundaries now, and to firm about it because this behavior is unacceptable.

After your more detailed explanation, I don’t think this is a Catholic thing at all.

This is a “them” thing. I think you are right that they have opinions about how things should be done and they are determined you will fall in line.

Your DH needs to have a talk with his parents. He needs to tell them that this line of intrusive questioning and saying hurtful things is NOT acceptable. He needs to establish boundaries and HE needs to stand up to them. He needs to set the boundaries and insist they follow them. If they don’t you are going to have to make a decision about how much contact you have, for your own sanity.

Devout, faithful Catholics who want to live out the Church’s teachings regarding faith, family, and marriage do not all have children “right away” and that does not mean they use contraception. And, people don’t go around saying “I bet they are using birth control…” THAT is gossip and that is a sin of it’s own. If we are truly being Christlike we don’t make assumptions about other people like that and then go accuse them of it! Your ILs are behaving badly and it has nothing to do with being Catholic.

Also, if you have been doing “nothing” for over a year while having regular intercourse, you MIL may have a point and not know it-- you could actually have a fertility issue that you are unaware of.

Thank you for your time and response. My husband will talk to them AGAIN this weekend, but who knows what will come of that. He has tried to explain to them that their actions are not only intrusive, but very hurtful as well, however they always seem to find a way to say that it is me and my selfishness that is the problem, not them. I’m at my witts end…I dred answerering the phone everytime I see their name on caller ID. I’m already stressed about seeing them on Easter, especially considering my bother in law’s wife just had another baby, MIL will find a way to sneak in a snide remark towards me. The thing is I don’t think that they think what they are doing is hurtful…maybe I’m just being nice though. In regards to the fertility issue; we haven’t prevented all the time just sometimes around my estimated ovulation period by withdrawl. Considering how unreliable that metohd is, maybe there is reason to suspect something…I do actually have my yearly exam in 2 weeks so I might mention it to my GYN. I don’t want anyone to think that I am an anti-child person…If I were to get pregnant now, then my husband and I would be trilled, but as I said before, we are also perfectly happy with things as they are at this moment. I just don’t like being criticized for not having/wanting them right away, which is what my in-laws are doing.
