Apophasis and Cataphasis

Would someone describe some of the eastern apophatic theological tradition to me? I understand that a synthesis of apophatic and cataphatic theology (like thesis and antithesis into synthesis) has been attempted in the west by Aquinas and others. Is this approach practiced in the east?

I’m trying to understand the historical context of these theological techniques.
