Apostle James in the litany of the saints

We had the following as a part of the litany of the saints:
Sancte Petre
Sancte Paule
Sancte Andrea
Sancte Iacobe
Sancte Ioannes
Sancte Thoma
Sancte Philippe
Sancte Bartholomaee
Sancte Matthaee
Sancte Simon
Sancte Thaddaee
Sancte Matthia

These correspond obviously to the apostles. However, there were two different James’ among the apostles. Why are they not recited separately? Is it an oversight or is this common? I cannot think they are not both saints, and other saints of the same name were mentioned separately, for example Maria, Mater Dei, and Maria Magdalena, or Teresia and Teresia Benedicta.

The vast majority of Saints are left out of the Litany. If they were all in it, reciting the Litany would take weeks. When it is recited at Baptisms, you normally add the name Saint of the candidate if it’s not one of the Saints normally in the litany.

The James in the Litany is the son of Zebidee, brother of John, patron Saint of Spain and known as the great. The other James, son of Alpheus and possibly the writer of the Epistle is known as James the less - he’s omitted.

I was once in a band where both guitarists were called Jim - so we were known as big Jim and little Jim. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose

That’s a bit disturbing. The apostles are a closed group, and everyone else (except Iscariot) is mentioned. Let’s suppose I was omitted like that, I would be offended.
 
Is it possible James the Less is listed next in that list and you accidentally cut it out? Paul is included in that list so if you started at Peter and just counted out 12 names, you would have left the last one out, as Paul makes 13.

If that isn’t the case then it does appear James the Less was left out.

The missalette for this Easter Vigil has a very short list. Of the apostles only Peter, Paul, Andrew and John are included. However, other saints will be added as appropriate to the particular parish.

My old, Pre-VII missal has all the apostles. Peter, Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Phillip etc.
 
In the EF, the Litany of Saints contains both St. James. I just checked my Angeles Press Missal.
