I’m from Argentina and I saw that you recite here in US, the large version of the Apostles’ Creed. Why is that? Is ok to recite the short version ?

I have never heard of a “short version”. We recite the version approved by the Church.

Until now in the US the Nicean Creed has been the one to be recited during regular Mass. The Apostles’ Creed is approved for Masses with children. Starting this advent season there will be implemented a change in the translation of the Missale Romanun and the Apostles’ Creed will be used more often.

yeah kind of funny, here in Canada we usually say the apostles creed, i was once at a conference here and the celebrating priest was American and started to say the Nicean creed, there was some confusion!

As shameful as it may be to admit, I don’t know that I learned the other but I know and did learn the Apostles Creed in school/church. It is the one we say in mass. I’m in Canada and currently working with my four year old on this 😊

We did say the Nicene Creed at some point, perhaps early in the use of the vernacular, but then we got an indult to use the Apostles Creed and that’s the one used in most parishes.

We’re supposed to use the Nicene at Christmas and the Annunciation but that doesn’t always happen. When the priest who was with us as Christmas started the Nicene it was the first time in 13 years that it had been used in this parish.

Here in the Philippines only the Apostles Creed is said at Mass. The Nicene Creed is never used.

In the Philippines its Apostles Creed all the time.

In Canada its Nicene Creed but the priest has the option to use the Apostle’s Creed. Surprisingly many do. My former RC pastor uses Nicene Creed exclusively with kneeling at the incarnation during Lent, Easter and Advent as well as the Christmas Season until Epiphany.

Mary the Queen in GreenHills used to use the Nicene Creed. But that was a while back, I don’t know if they still do. I was there a couple of weeks ago but never went to Mass there. At that time I didn’t understand why they have a different Creed than most parishes.

Anyway, do you think its because of a lack of an approved Filipino version of the Nicene Creed? Or just that many devoutly pray the Rosary and are already familiar with the Apostle’s Creed?

I really don’t know but most people here pray the Rosary very often so everyone knows the Apostles Creed by heart.
Before I came here to live the other countries I lived in used the Nicene Creed but I could never remember it by heart. I always had to read it at Mass whereas because of the Rosary I find the Apostles Creed always in my mind.

It is an unfortunate trend if we are moving toward using the Apostles Creed during Mass.

There is much in the Nicene Creed concerning Jesus being consubstantial with the Father and His divine nature. With the current tendency in much of Christianity to devalue Jesus’ divinity and see Him as good guy / community organizer, we need more emphasis on this not less. Unfortunately with the current state of catechism of the laity, I suspect many people just say the words without really understanding them anyway 😦

Many saints fought and died for these truths and now we are just throwing away the fruits of their labor.

The Aposlte Creed was well before the Nicean one and a true traditionalist would appreciate using the early traditions of the Church during the Liturgy.

Saying that the Apostle’s Creed would devalue Jesus’ divinity and it is a tool to throw away the fruits of the labor of saints makes me think of a lack of understanding or acceptance of Church history and of Her strength because of Her infallibility.

I think that sentence that I bolded sadly reflects the truth. I think that the apostles Creed should have its righteous place in the liturgy and pious devotions. I also think that we should always use the Nicean Creed as a basis to develop a solid catechetical instruction. I always tell my students that the Nicean Creed is the “Cliff notes” of our religion, if you memorize it and you understand it you can explain to people what you believe in.

The GIRM requires the Creed be said at Mass. It does not specify which one.
I also totally disagree with all your comments.

I once had a visiting priest reduce the Creed to one word (and he talked about it for longer than it would have taken to just recite the Creed). So his one word Creed would be the shortest – “Jesus”.

The Mass, of course, was full of abuses and painful, I don’t know why I was too chicken to walk out. I’m happy I don’t have to worry about that now, my only worry is that a visiting priest might have a thick French accent 🙂

Do you mean at Mass? At Mass we use the Nicene Creed, not the Apostles’ Creed. However, before the Rosary we generally pray the Apostles’ Creed. The Apostles’ Creed is shorter than the Nicene Creed. Is this what you mean by short vs. long?

Here’s one more argument in favor of the TLM… Anywhere you are in the world, the 1962 Roman Missal calls for the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed on all Sundays and major feast days.

Seems an easy way to clear up all this confusion would be to return to having one, uniform Ordinary of the Mass for use throughout all of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, as we did for 1400 years.
