I am in a dispute over the Apostle’s creed as I was taught it in the 1930’s. I believe that it was the first Vatican Council that the wording “Jews” was replaced with :Pontius Pilot"

Where can I find a posting of this version ?

Im sure that is wrong because the Catechism of Trent (mid 1500s) made it clear Pilate was there to teach both that it was a historical event in time and that it was at the hands of gentiles.Since we find it here so diligently recorded that Jesus Christ suffered when Pontius Pilate was procurator of Judea, the pastor should explain the reason. By fixing the time, which we find also done by the Apostle Paul, so important and so necessary an event is rendered more easily ascertainable by all. Furthermore those words show that the Saviour’s prediction was really verified: They shall deliver him to the Gentiles, to be mocked and scourged and crucified.
(Catechism of Trent; Aritlce 4)

The Creed has always said Pontius Pilate. My copy of Denzingers has the Apostles Creed from the Psalter of Rufinus, which comes from very early in the history of the Church, and it says Pontius Pilate.

You were either taught wrong or you remember wrong, as Vatican 1 was in the 1870’s, and it did not make changes in either the Apostles’ or Nicene Creeds.

I Humbly admit that my memory was wrong. but wasn’t there some reference to blaming “the jews” that was corrected by the Vatican?

I am new to this type of forum so please forgive me if I step on someones toes. I have always believed that Pilate had no choice in what he did. Forced into his position by the Sanhedren

Thank you for your reply to my query

I’ve never heard anything about changing the creed for this purpose, but if anyone else knows about this, I’d be interested in hearing it.

I always inferred from the gospel story that Pilate was not malicious, but weak. He knew he was delivering an innocent man to death, but wanted to protect his own position, so he did it anyway.

This was in the Easter Vigil Liturgy (I think; possibly on Good Friday Lit.) I have no accurate memory but I think it was changed during the 2nd Vatican Council.

You’re pretty near right. The TLM for Good Friday included a prayer for the conversion of Jews (part of the larger prayer for the conversion of all non-christians). This was not included in the Novus Ordo mass.

When Pope Benedict XVI lifted the restrictions on the TLM, many Jewish groups were upset and alleged antisemitism.

Here is the english translation of the prayer in question:
Let us pray also for the faithless Jews: that our God and Lord may remove the veil from their hearts; that they also may acknowledge Our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray. Almighty and Eternal God, Who dost not exclude from Thy mercy even the faithless Jews: hear our prayers, which we offer for the blindness of that people; that acknowledging the light of Thy Truth, which is Christ, they may be delivered from their darkness. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all endless ages. Amen.
