Hi, everyone.
Is there anything in Scripture about the apostles actively worshipping Jesus before his death? I know Thomas said “My Lord and my God” after feeling the wounds, but that was the resurrected Jesus.
At the Transfiguration (surely a moment that would take one’s breath away), they seemed to act out of terror rather than worship.
Thanks for any help.

I think the primary reason the Apostles didnt worship Him was because they didnt really comprehend the reality of His divinity until the Passion, Death, and Resurrection had occurred.

I think the word ‘worship’ has to be defined in any case.
King James Version, Luke 14:10 which has Jesus saying:
But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
Clearly Jesus did not mean those who took his advice would be worship in the sense that we worship Jesus. The word can mean different things depending on context.

I think the disciples honored Him, and the Apostles in particular reverenced Him. I don’t think they understood who He is until later.

In my opinion…
Matthew 16:16
16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Would be the first act of St. Peter worshiping Jesus in the Bible.

However, at that time I do not think he fully understood. Jesus words kind of tell us this…
17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
Now you also mentioned the Transfiguration, which just so happens to be the very next chapter.
5 He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe.

Although I do agree that they were probably terrified, I think at that moment they understood and would have continued to worship Jesus. However, if we keep reading we can see Jesus instructed them not to…
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead.
If Peter, James and John started worshiping Jesus from that point forward they would have had to explain the vision to the others, which Jesus commanded them not to.

Just my 2 cents.

Hope it helps,

God Bless

Somewhere in the Gospel, I think just before the ascension, it says that the disciples worshipped but doubted. I wonder what the doubt was all about…

D-R Bible, Haydock Commentary:

Matthew 28

Verse 17

They adored: but some doubted. This, says Theophylactus, need not be understood of the apostles, but of others, who had not seen Christ after his resurrection. It may also be expounded of those disciples who had doubted at the first, and particularly of St. Thomas the apostle. (Witham) — These doubted not of the resurrection or divinity of Christ, but whether the person that appeared to them was really their Master, Jesus Christ. (Bible de Vence)
